.2c: Liking it so far. My machine is pretty high end, and I'm a little disappointed that I notice such a big performance hit with transparency on in Aero, but other than that, I'm pretty impressed.

Few problems that I ran into:

- The latest Setpoint threw this error: "VC8 library was not installed correctly, please restart the machine and reinstall". This pointed me to the MS Visual C++ 2005 Redist package, but that wouldn't install on my machine with another error (I don't recall what it was). Solution was to install Setpoint 4.24 which works fine anyway.

- Installing Office 2007 pro gave me an error about the installer not supporting the native language on my machine. I have Ultimate, and tried the usual Google fixes, none of which worked. Fortunately I had a copy of 2007 Standard laying around as well (corporate) so my "fix" was just to install that, and install Visio separately.

- Had to repair/fix WoW, and for one obscure reason or another, UAC blocked the patch/repair tool from doing anything to the folder. Turned off UAC and I could patch, runs great now. I still hate the UAC popups, but am leaving it on for the time being to see if I can get better at dealing with it or at least understand it more. I downgraded to XP from Vista because of it a couple years ago.

- I have an AMD64 machine, running the 64b Windows 7, with 8GB of RAM in dual channel. For some reason, Windows sees six, and Crucial's scanner sees 3. Debian on the same machine sees all 8, and XP saw 4 (3 user, 1 kernel) so I don't think it's hardware, but still puzzling.

The only gripe I have right now is that it seems to log in pretty slow compared to XP. Once I put in my password, it's 30-45 seconds until I'm at the desktop, as opposed to 15 or so under XP. I've done a few of the 7F tweaks, so will keep plugging away.

Otherwise very happy with it, definitely a big improvement on Vista.

Well, unless I somehow changed something without realizing it, or the RC version was different and my settings copied over it with my new install, all that happens when I click the Explorer that's pinned is it opens up a window with Library, maybe shit like Favorites, etc. (I'm not at home so I can't tell you exactly right now, but it is at most 4 or 5 items, and none of them are Desktop or Computer). In order for me to get to Computer, I have to go back to Desktop, then to Computer. Since I go to the Computer screen all the time, it gets sort of annoying. I want it to immediately open to the C, D, E, etc. drives instead of the one it does.

So unless I'm doing something wrong, or there is a setting somewhere to tell Explorer what to open up in, that shortcut trick is the only way I'm going to get what I want it seems.

If your running a multi-core, you need to set the number of boot cores. It is set to 1 by default.

From memory:

Winlogo -> search bar-> msconfig -> enter
Type MSConfig into the text box after “Open”.
Go to Boot tab.
For dual-boot or multi-boot system, make sure that the operating system to make the change is selected.
Click on Advanced options button.
Tick the check box for Number of processors, and then select the maximum number count of CPU core processors value from the drop down list.
Click OK twice to exit System Configuration.
Restart computer.

If you click the Organize button at the top and go to Layout then make sure Navigation Pane is checked. You should get a pane to the left that has my computer and downloads all sorts of stuff.

then follow this Trick to Open Computer or Documents as Default Instead of Libraries Folder with Windows Explorer on Windows 7 » My Digital Life and it will change the default to open up to My Computer.

Wow, nice. Thanks for the tip. So essentially the OS is defaulted on booting up with one core? But this change will allow it to boot up using multiple cores obviously.

Both fantastic tips, thanks both of you very much. It seems to me that some of this stuff should be *slightly* easier to figure out on your own. Or am I just talking crazy talk?

Is there an option (c) All Of The Above?

Seriously though, I agree...excellent tips that SHOULD be easier to get on your own.

Cut my boot time down to a third of what it was. Oh, and FYI, eSATA fucking FLIES in Win7, several times faster than transfer rate in old XP build on the same hardware.

Why? 99.9% of users will not do this. It's not important for it to be easy to do it. The people who will can research and figure it out.

I went through that australia.edu for the $30 upgrades and have gotten 2 keys so far through it for one of my 64bit systems and my other 32bit system. I intend on getting one for my laptop too.

99.9% of users wont do it cause they dont know about it...

If they knew, and it was a simple button to press, I am sure EVERYONE would do it.

Can any of you sort this for me? Been googling to no avail, and it's driving me nuts. I can't seem to add anything to favorites in windows explorer. If I right click it and select "Add current location to favorites", nothing happens. If I try to drag and drop a folder there, I get this:

Edit: Got it. For one reason or another, having folders under it was breaking it. Interesting.
