In normal times, Iranian television usually treats its viewers to one or two Hollywood or European movie nights a week. But these are not normal times, so it's been two or three such movies a day. It's part of the push to keep people at home and off the streets, to keep us busy, to get us out of the regime's hair. The message is "Don't worry, be happy." Channel Two is putting on a Lord of the Rings marathon as part of the government's efforts to restore peace.

Anyways, The student protests that happened in '99 lasted about a week before a major crackdown. Did you all forget about them? Honestly what did the world think was so different this time around for the reformists?

A lot of the leadership looks like its swaying too. Its easier to just blame outsiders than to believe the system you're a part of is flawed. In the end it just looks like the amount of fanatics in that country is overwhelming, and unfortunately they're willing to go all the way for what they believe in. The best route seems to be what some families are doing, and that's to just get their kids out of there.

To be fair, it took a year to overthrow the Shah. But if leaders like Moussavi and Rafsanjani are going to pussy out on protests and not lead folk, this is doomed to failure. Rafsanjani ponied up real quick after his kids got arrested for a few hours.

No. Micheal Jackson's death put Iran in it's proper space. On the back page. The US should have no interest in Iran.

The unneeded 24 hour news we are now forced to accept is as fickle as a 16 year old girl. They get hyped up over the most trivial shit for ratings. I think the whole Iranian thing was completely blown out of proportion. There is no way that many people in Iran want democracy and do not hate the "The Great Satan". The majority of the country is on the side of Ahmadinejad. Kill the infidels in the name of Allah.

When Fox News is pushing a story as hard as they were pushing this one it can only mean it is not really a story and Fox is using it for some type of Republican Propaganda agenda. This uprising was Iran's Tiananmen Square where a bunch of eggheads who want to listen to Lil' Wayne and drink beer started to protest. This was not like the 1979 revolution. The people of Iran want an oppressive Islamic government. The West can not understand that, however that is the will of the people.

Mideast peace is a noble concept but it is only a concept. It is simply not possible.

Well, we in the US, don't have diplomatic relations with the Iranians (and haven't since 1978) so neither of us can throw each other's diplomats out of the country. I expect the UK-Iranian relations to get a lot worse before this is all said and done with.

Some of you have no fucking concept of history and how this shit works.

Iran has severed a vital link between itself and its people. This is a cancer that will eat away at it.

Iran is changing.. they will become either China, and open up more and relax somewhat, staying an Islamic Republic pretty much in name only, or they will become North Korea and close down.

The status quo is no longer an option in Iran however.

The reasons the protests have died down is that Iran has taken extreme measures to close them down, shutting down the internet, arresting people, maintaining a massive police presence.
None of this is sustainable long term.

Remember... one of the core reasons for the unpopularity of Ahmendinjed is the faltering economy.... How do you think their economy is looking now? Not only that.. but they have lost tons of internation support and their ability to fight off sanctions from the UN has been greatly diminished.
