Its because people are under the false impression that choosing the thing that something tells you is wrong gives you more freedom, when the opposite is true.

People will squeeze, sniff, and compare the color of fucking fruits and vegetables in the grocery store...

But they'll commit the rest of their life to someone who they haven't even made sure has functional and proper genitalia...

Fucking amazing.

I blame religion.

I'm not even sure what to say here except that Suineg is legitimately shitting up several threads here with the stupidest fucking opinions I've heard in a while. It cracks me up when Dumar seems more sensible.

One of the points of the symposium was that cohabitation usually leads to a WEAKER marriage commitment.

I know it's counterintuitive, but that's what the research on the topic shows.

Also, on a side note, since it was at BYU, I'd assumed it'd be pretty biased to the local flavor, but they actually strongly criticized the mormon standard of getting married at 19-20 years old, and implored the therapists and graduate students in attendence to try and get these kids to AT LEAST wait until they are 25.

I know it sounds strange, but round these parts, if you are 21 and unmarried, consider yourself a pariah. And if you're a mormon woman, when you hit 21 and you aren't married, that means you go on a 1.5 year mission (converting people abroad) to buy yourself some time so you can say "Oh, I'm 23 and unmarried, but I went on a mission!"

Eomer, trust me, any benefit to Utah women is far, far outweighed by the detriment. Though, if you CAN crack the panty code... my god they are the horniest chicks this side of the rockies. There's just somethign special about having sex with a girl, and then having her go home and tell her Bishop and parents what she did... when the girl is like 24.
Did the cohabitation thing hold true for those who got married older? Cause I've tended to see that those who got married at older ages (say 29 or so) had far fewer problems regardless of pre-marriage cohabitation

This logic is fallible.

People who live together before marriage are more likely to be liberal. Liberal people tend to think on their own two feet. People who use their own brain are more likely to get divorced when a relationship is over, and less likely to stay married because of religious doctrine, social pressures, conservative ideals, etc.

People who wait till they're married to have sex, are extremely conservative.
People who are conservative tend to be religious in nature. One of the major religious beliefs being that they'll go to hell if they break their commandment with God. They also basically have no fucking idea what other fish there are in the sea because they usually marry the first person that shows any interest in them whatsoever. They have no frame of reference for good or bad, when they've only had one sexual relationship their entire life. Most people that are conservative are retarded and will stay in dead relationships because of religious ideology, social status, financial status, children, convenience, maintaining the status quo, etc.

My father's sister and my uncle have no relationship whatsoever, as stated by my aunt. They have separate bedrooms, and live this charade because my aunt actually believes they will both go to hell if they get divorced. It has been this way for at least as long as I can remember. So they are tricking God by staying married, but living like nothing more than roommates. Interesting rule set for eternal salvation don't you say?

My Grandmother on my mother's side, got married to my Grandfather after WW2 specifically because she was afraid if they continued dating they would do something that would send them to hell. It is a good thing they got married, were both Catholic, and never used condoms so they didn't go to hell. Interesting that following the church doctrine they had 12 children, 11 of which ended up Catholic. I'm sure this has nothing to do with the church increasing it's numbers.

People are fucking stupid, the reality of the situation is that marriage is an illogical social norm propped up by religion. There is no such thing as a soulmate. If you're lucky you might find someone that will be able to put up with your crap while you in turn put up with theirs.

The real correlation would be religion with divorce. How many people believe they'll go to hell for getting divorced have never been divorced, and how many don't believe in this nonsense who have been divorced. Let's not confuse masochism with fidelity.

So wait, you counter clinical research with an anecdote? As if liberal or conservative labels are even close to comprehensive.

I didn't imply causation, just correlation.

This poll was made just to see who is a virgin so far we have.

Bladefury, joz123, kegkilla, Kragg Goremaw, Tapion91, Toxxulian, Vehn, Zaphid, Zarcath. Got to say I am not surprised to see some of those on the list.

Ahh so only smart people have sex before marriage.

Only smart people.....

I laugh at how judgmental 98% of the people in this thread are and yet I am the judgmental hypocrite who is teaching my children to hate because I talk the same way to them that I do on a forum...

I am so saddened that religion is out to stop you from having fun.

You don't believe in it so don't follow it's rules to keep you down.

I could care less about religion's rules. You don't know me. You don't know my dogma. You don't know the first thing about my moral compass.

Since people are stupid let me break it down.

My parents were drug dealer hippies living on a nudist colony or in a van depending on the time line. They gave me up for adoption. Good for them. Even better for me. I was adopted by a family that wanted boys and all they had were girls. I moved from the receiving home in Hillcrest to rural San Diego.

I grew up in a non-denominational protestant church. For those not in the know that means that the basics of the protestant faith we believe in aka Jesus. The rest of the extraneous stuff matters very little. Most of it is tied strictly to religion so I won't bore you with the details. The point being it's probably one of the most lackadaisical ways to be religious.

I volunteered in the local community. I went to private school, I went to public school, one year I was expelled from a school and did home school. At the end of all that I graduated. I spent my summer after graduation in an internship to become a pastor. I don't have the gift of teaching. Before you get into some mumbo jumbo about how did I know and did God just speak to me I will just jump the gun and just say I had blank stares in the crowd one too many time. It just wasn't for me.

I joined the Marine Corps. Learned a lot about life. Got married to a girl I grew up with since age 4 and we had been dating for several years. I volunteer all over the place. We had a baby die from a horrible condition out of a horror movie. We got pregnant with twins early after that. They were born 3 months early. We got the hint that no more kids should be had by us. I went back and forth to Iraq and other countries. I took several college courses in a bunch of topics to include sociology, religion, and math...

Cue today. I have come up with a lot of things that are contrary to 'religion' as a whole for my belief system. Let me give you the laundry list. I will reference this post from time to time so feel free to cut and paste it into a word doc if you don't want to go back to it.

I believe abortion has a place in our society. I feel that late term however does not.
I believe in stem cell research.
I believe in cloning.
I believe in divorce
I believe in the death penalty.
I believe in guns and lots of them.
I believe in freedom of religion ALL of them.
I believe in gay marriage (at a federal level).
I believe drugs are stupid because of what it does to your judgment only.
I believe in alcohol sort of contradictory to the above one but minorly so.
I believe in kids learning about sex education to include abstinence but not only that. I believe abstinence works 100% of the time it's followed. You can't beat those odds.
I believe we are accountable for our actions.
I believe in suicide, your choice to die just don't make it for someone else.
I believe in assisted suicide but I think there should be some legalities involved to prevent someone from faking a murder into suicide.
I believe that black people and white people and whatever color people should have the same rights.
I believe in taxes and not tax cuts.
I believe that Bush won the election in 2004 fair and square.
I believe that 95% of liberals are just snobs who look down on everyone else and feel they are the intelligentsia elite of our day and age because they are 'free thinkers' or they are just wanting to be trendy.

I do not believe that my beliefs outweigh your beliefs unless backed by legality or medical science.
I do not believe that everyone who is religious is automatically a moron.
I do not believe that everyone who is not religious is automatically a moron.
I do not believe in cheating on your spouse.
I do not believe in fairies.
I do not believe in ambiguities. Someone is right and someone is wrong and I don't care who but you can't have it both ways.
I do not believe in gay marriage at a state level. I don't believe in any laws at a state level that are more lenient then federal ones, it's counterproductive.
I do not believe in Santa.
I do not believe in teaching my kids only the Bible and forcing them to be religious, it is their choice and I lead a good example in front of them at all costs. You guys are supposed to be adults I think that should rate some reality that kids can't comprehend yet.
I do not believe in sex before marriage as a logical thing just because you want to have 'fun'. Nothing to do with religion but if you never have sex you won't get pregnant or have STD's unless some freak thing happens. If you do it then great but stop thinking that everyone that waits is a religious freak.
I do not believe in giving the church all my money and try to spread my 10% of time and money into all kind of organizations whether they be secular or religious.

If that is so wrong then so be it but stop being bigoted, hateful, idiots who think that everyone else that has a differing opinion must be a complete moronic mouth breather just barely a chromosome short of downs and by stating their opinion it must be in order to shove it down your throat.

Look it up, Salacious:

Married individuals earn more, live longer, stay healthier, have more assets, and raise more successful children. Statistics bear it out over and over again.

You can come up with anecdotes that disparage just about anything from religion to apple pie. I'm sure there's a story somewhere of someone dying a horrible, painful death because of a good night's sleep. Should we all forgo sleep to avoid that fate? In general, sleep makes people healthier...it's proven by science! and science.

Marriage isn't useless. Big question I have to ask: why do religions support marriage so strongly?

Religion supports marriage and having lots of kids so strongly because it's like an auto-recruitment tool for their religion most of the time.
