| So the trend continues. The swine flu only kills mexicans, there have been 8 total deaths directly linked to the swine flu. There are a total of 28 confirmed cases of the swine flu. Given that, the disease appears to be frighteningly lethal. However. If it were that lethal there would be hundreds or thousands dead in Mexico. That's where the disease originated. Even if it had a long incubation period we would still see hundreds dead in Mexico simply because it was there first.

| Is this true? A news article I read earlier said as many as 2500 had it in Mexico, but I also remember reading elsewhere that the number was inflated because they just started saying anyone that got sick had the swine flu. On average, 36,000 Americans die each year because of the flu (or flu related illness). I've read nothing that suggests that this will be any deadlier than the average.. In fact, many articles say that the cases in the US are mild. So far this is blown entirely out of proportion. edit- Found this article after I wrote this post, hope it's not already posted in here: The Road to the Horizon: How many people die of flu every year? How many died of swineflu? |

+54 Internets | I suppose the WHO sets the level based on the potential threat, not on what's actually going on? The reason, I presume, is that it takes a few months to gear up and if this "mild" version in Spring is followed by a much more potent version in Fall, then governments would have to start preparing right now. I really doubt there are measures in place to deal with a huge influx of patients in hospitals, never mind the shock to the economy from having people sick and not working. I suppose this is cold, but the death toll doesn't have to be the worst of a pandemic. Even if very few people die, it can create a huge disruption. |

| I'd say they're about the same as this being as bad as the media says it will be.

| Maybe, but maybe on the plus side this flu thing turns out to be very serious and we DO get zombies?
