| Special Needs Kids Beat To Hell....in Basketball Texas prep hoops team wants to forfeit 100-0 win - Other sports- nbcsports.msnbc.com You'd think that after a 59-0 halftime you'd let the poor kids shoot a few good shots. text below: A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 blowout has apologized to the losing school, calling the game "shameful and an embarrassment.'' Officials from The Covenant School, a private Christian school in Dallas, said Thursday they are seeking to forfeit the win because "victory without honor is a great loss.'' Covenant defeated The Dallas Academy 100-0 on Jan. 13. Covenant led 59-0 at halftime. The Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and just 20 girls in the school. The academy specializes in teaching students with what it calls "learning differences,'' such as short attention spans or difficulty in concentrating. According to the Dallas Morning News, Dallas Academy won't be playing Covenant again this season; they canceled their Jan. 30 game against the team. After the game, Dallas Academy informed the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools that it was withdrawing its girls team from the league for the rest of the season. "We just said, 'The hell with it,' " said Jim Richardson, Dallas Academy's headmaster, told the Morning News. Dallas Academy Athletic Director Jeremy Civello told the Morning News he was surprised to see an obviously superior team keep the pressure on until it scored its 100th point in the fourth quarter. "I'm sure they could have won by 30 points and still had just as good a time," Civello said. In an e-mail statement to the Morning News on Wednesday, Covenant coach Micah Grimes called his team's 100-point total "unfortunate." "It just happened, and we are not happy about that," Grimes wrote. "Please know Covenant intended no harm against them. I see this as a real learning opportunity, so we can prevent this from happening in the future." Kyle Queal, head of school at Covenant, was not at the game, but told the Morning News there have been internal discussions about the game. "It was poor judgment," Queal said. "I look at the box score and look at the box score, and it was not justified. It will never happen again." Covenant was ahead 35-0 after the first quarter before building on their lead. "They are really good," Civello told the Morning News. "Their point guard is terrific. This is what it came down to in the second half: steal at half court and layup. Steal and layup. Steal and layup. It was a layup drill. They finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left." Covenant's point guard had 48 points. In a strange twist, Dallas Academy's boys team defeated Covenant 50-38 immediately after the 100-0 girls game. |

+17 Internets | Wait, they're ashamed because they beat a team in a sport since the other team had some folks with ADD? I work with the disabled for a living, and regularly interact with advocates, but this is still some stupid shit. You don't slow down and throw a game just because the other team sucks. If they're that bad, they shouldn't be in the league. |

| This was entirely the fault of the Dallas Academy for putting special needs kids in that situation. Covenant has nothing to apologize for, under no circumstances should a competitive team be forced to play beneath their level. The game should never have taken place. The expected result happened, why the fuck is anyone surprised.

| Running up the score is unsportsmanlike even if the teams are in the same league, so yeah they should be a little embarrassed about letting it get to 100-0. They should put in a mercy rule though if there isn't already one in place. |

There was no need for them to beat the piss out of the other team as bad as they did, whether they belonged in the league or not. The coach should be fucking embarassed.

| What is it about team sports that makes people think running up the score is somehow bad? I see early rounds of tennis that go 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, I see early rounds of racquetball that go 11-0, but oh if you beat someone 100-0 in basketball you're a bunch of assholes? Why? You played the game. Sports isn't a place for your feelings, it's a place to play a game as well as you can. If they played an obviously superior team, they should have tried a few things and seen how they worked rather than crying about losing. The "special needs" part is just media sensationalism since the Dallas Academy doesn't work with retards, just kids with learning disabilities. It doesn't affect their sports afaik. |

Hell, this is what happens in Div-1 (sorry, FBS) football every damn year. Really, what's the point of Ohio State beating the shit out of say, Youngstown State? If you don't want the shit kicked out of you, get the fuck out of the league. Plus, like mentioned above, they're not even really special needs. They've got ADD. They were probably too busy thinking about eating pussy (since they're basketball players and all) to concentrate on the game.

| Coddling the idiots and untalented. That's what'll get us ahead in the world. If you suck at basketball... don't play the damn sport. Which, I guess, is what happened~ Good then. Other team shouldn't have to apologize though. Their role as good basketball players is to give 100% through the whole game. That's what they're trained to do. What they're not trained to do is babysit retards so their feelings don't get hurt.
