My point with companies too large to fail is that they forced the government to bail them out, despite the fact that they overleveraged themselves, invested in shoddy investments, and pushed the economy in the direction where the bubble popped caused the situation where if they went down, everyone else went down.

Compound that with the fact that the Fed had cut rates to all time lows and propped up the housing bubble in the first place, and it was a disaster in the making. Throwing money at these companies whose unbridled greed help get us here in the first place is not the solution. You don't teach a kid not to cry for candy by throwing them some candy and asking for a promise that they behave.

Whose going to come asking for payment on their loans immediatly? It's a global economy now. Every country hurts when any country hurts. Unless they are asking with tanks ready to take it by force its not happening and there aren't any countries that are going to bother with taking the risk. There is no point.
Maybe not now, but this kind of attitude is also what got us into shit geopolitically. My point is that sort term gains for long term pain is not the course we should be taking. Bailing out incomptency is not the course we should be taking. Printing money without care for whether our economic power suffers 20 years down the line is careless. Yes, we can't predict what 20 years may bring us - but for the same argument people give on global warming, is it worth taking that risk that 20 years later, we get fucked for something that people are warning us against?

And yes, people recovered - heck Japan went through a lost decade and was recovering. But throwing money at the problem, again, did nothing to help them and it only made them poorer in the long run.

They did recover, but they didn't reach Roman levels until hundreds of years later. Society did literally fall back to village life, life expectation went down, etc.

There isn't a chance we see any kind of fall back like that, but people damn well should be prepared to change their lifestyles in the future.

I'm counting on the housing crash to last another 18-ish months so I can pick up a quasi-mansion on the cheap here in Dallas somewhere. Does that count as a change in lifestyle?

That CNBC video was great. I don't think a fair population of the american people are too far from that now. I know I'm not.

That's what politicians do, normally. Learn the languages of their people.

haha, it's pretty much a requirement that any PM of Canada be fluently bilingual. Or in Jean Chretien's case, unable to speak either language. And in a news conference of this significance, it's pre-arranged that the French and English media each get to ask an equal number of questions (despite the francophone population of Canada being less than 20% of the total population vs bilingual and anglophone).

What a bad way to display that data, show Bush in the same part of his presidency as Obama is currently in and lets see how similar they actualy are.

The way I see it is that Obama's graph looks extremely similar to the shape of very left edge of Bush's

BTW: Perfect capture of the mood of the country YouTube - Rick Santelli and the "Rant of the Year"

I know his impediment is in jest and all when referring to Chretien but at least he tried, Stefan Dione ( SP? ) was probably the worst possible case I could fathom for bilingualism. Chretien you couldn't understand really, but he was saying the right things, Dion was a fucking retard that just butchered the language, and it still blows my mind that the liberal party decided that he would be a great choice for representation. It's the God Damn PM , this is how the world see's our country and the liberals offer us the fucking guy that sounds like he's straight out of a South Park episode focusing on Canada ... Whenever I heard that guy on the radion during the news all I saw in my head was a floppy head ala SP like the Canadian guy that argues for Terrance and Phillips freedom in the movie....

I shudder at the thought of him having been the guy to welcome Obama to Canada.

Already beat you to it a page ago.

And in other news, are black people even more sensitive to the race issue now that a black man is president?

Protests over a controversial New York Post cartoon drew people from all walks of life Thursday -- as activists outlined a detailed plan to show their outrage and demand changes from the spirited tabloid.

It was a huge demonstration, one that clearly got the attention of The Post.

The newspaper came under fire Wednesday after a cartoon was published that critics said links President Barack Obama to a raging chimpanzee shot dead by police in Connecticut. But the newspaper also said the image was exploited by its longtime antagonists.

At least the stimulus is keeping the middle class afloat . . .

Quote:
Billionaire Paul Allen is a Microsoft cofounder, the owner of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and the owner of the NBA's Portland Trailblazers.

And, thanks to the stimulus bill President Obama signed this week, he's also about to be as much as a billion dollars richer.
I have no grudge against Allen, but it's ridiculous that we're plunging into unprecedented debt for something like this. Even the most ardent supply-siders aren't pushing to get Paul Allen a billion dollar tax cut in the current economy, yet there's a billion dollars less in revenue and a billion more in debt (which will be compounded amply and bone all of us younger folks well into our elderly years).
