The only other thing is the gun might've been a low-powered one. I didn't see what kind of gun it was in the article.
Well, Luthair already owned you, but I'm a fan of tag teaming. It only said he was shot in the head. Your brain, for the most part, resides in the top half of your head. Towards the back it extends downwards to the brain stem. But there's numerous cases of people being shot below eye level and surviving it because the bullet for the most part missed their brain entirely.

I mean fuck, that's why after the ownage you've received, you should be sure to point the gun UPWARDS while it's in your mouth, and not towards the back of your head. Because blowing the back of your neck out non-fatally is the ultimate failure :/.

And yah, that Phineas Gage story is pretty cool. The problem with bullets is that they make a mess of things while travelling through the brain. But shit like nails, arrows, and even shrapnel won't liquify your entire brain, and if they travel through cleanly people survive that kind of shit all the time.

That was a study on craniocerebral missile wounds, so you know there were some toy arrows in the mix that skewed the death rate to 92%.

Being an internet doctor & firearms expert thanks to Google and TV, I would think that the fact the bullets break into pieces would be a big factor in making a mess. That probably isn't the case with most other projectiles like the iron spike, though of course that was much larger instead.

That isn't the way I read that section; Google didn't find me the actual study, but it did find me this. If you search the doc for 314 several times you should find this:

Quote:
Siccardi et al.,
199119 - Civilian (n = 314). Studied the outcome of patients with gunshot wounds to the brain presenting to hospital dead or alive.

If your kids shoot you, you deserved it. This is ultimate karma.

Video games could have saved lives here, not destroyed. Kid plays video game = parents alive. Kid doesn't play = parents dead. Gotta blame the parents!

Tasteless humor aside, I think the most fucked up thing is the kid tried to go with the murder / suicide frame on his fucking parents...and his dad is a pastor too? I don't know if I will ever have kids for this and a myriad of other reasons. Wonder how shit like this, school shootings, etc. read from a parent's perspective?

Terrible story aside, I have a bunch of guns, and I keep them in a locked safe, but I (and everyone I know) also use trigger locks on the guns IN the safe, with the keys kept in separate locations. Hindsight is 20/20 but that would have saved a life in this case.

While its obviously its a messed up situation, we shouldn't automatically blame him, normal people in normal situations don't do this. Either the he is psychotic, or the parents were doing something fucked up to the kid.

Really though, the kid apparently knew where the keys/combination for the safe was so he probably would have known the location of any other keys. So unless the father had kept the keys on him at all times it wouldn't have made a difference. The only thing that would have helped would have been not to have a gun around period.

MANNING, S.C. — Investigators say a clerk at a Manning dry cleaner survived and managed to call 911 after a robber took her to the back of the store and shot her execution style.
Authorities told WIS-TV that 23-year-old Heather Brammer remains in the hospital after being shot in the base of her skull.
Investigators say a man came into City Laundry and Cleaners on Friday, took cash from the register, then brought Brammer to the back of the store and shot her in the head.
WIS obtained the tape of a 911 call Brammer made after the shooting, where she tells the operator she was shot, along with "my head's killing me" and "I can't see right."
Police haven't made any arrests.

Teenagers aren't normal people. Anyone that was one or currently knows any would know that. Hormone imbalances create issues with judgment and emotion. Combine that with strict Christian upbringing that didn't take* and you end up with the possibility of a normal kid killing his parents. There's also the possibility that what presents itself as suicidal tendencies in some kids might present itself as simple moral ambivalence in others. Pissed at parents, don't care about yourself or life in general, have access to gun. Dead parents. That'll teach em for not letting me play my game!

Also...read about the Manson family and how quickly and easily normal people can be turned into killers.

*My own pet theory, but if parents rely entirely on Biblical teachings to instill values in their kids and the kids reject those Biblical teachings, the kids will end up with no values. "The only reason I shouldn't kill people is because they think God said "thou shalt not kill", but God doesn't exist and I don't give a shit what they think he said."

Yeah I'd say the Dad being a retarded minister had a lot to do with this. People heavily involved in religion usually churn out the most fucked up kids around.

Since they said the gun was in the lockbox with the Xbox, how did he get into the lockbox to begin with? If he could get into the lockbox why didn't he just take out the xbox and play instead of grabbing the gun?

Maybe by locking the Xbox with the gun, the father associated Xbox and the gun with forbidden fruit. If playing the Xbox is fun, shooting someone with a gun must be funner.

Already been said, but I thought I would point this out .

Like the amish school girls, all shot in the head, point blank. One of them actually had the bullet bounce around in her brain, the doctors said the damage was too great and sent her home to die, but she survived, though at a diminished capacity. The rest are all back in school or working, they have weakened limb problems or sight problems, but for the most part have recovered well, even though all I believe had a bullet penetrate their brain.
