| Certain groups are protected specifically because for extended periods of time those groups were not afforded the same rights or protections that you were. And if they did have the same rights they weren't enforced due to prejudice. That's why. Being White and Male and Straight just means all the rules that are in place are already working for you. edit: I'm not sure what sexual preference has anything to do with this either.

I don't appreciate affirmative action since it has often worked directly against me. I couldn't be promoted at a hotel I worked at for over a year because a lesser skilled cuban was needed in the higher ranks to improve the company's appearance. No, this wasn't exactly affirmative action. It was just PR. These same cubans then used their prejudice to create unfair hiring practices that excluded black people. It was a joke. It's hard not to feel forgotten with my particular origin, but I've educated myself enough not to hate everyone. I've developed a sense of apathy about our civilization, and hope that should I have children I can give them a better shot. Above all I try not to be a hypocrite. Put in the same situation I treat the above cubans, blacks, whites, etc. equally. An endless series of wrongs being addressed by more wrongs doesn't make the world right. |
