Southernization of the GOP:

Founded in the decade before the Civil War as the Northern voice of union, the Republican Party today is more electorally dependent on the South than at any point in its past.

In the House and Senate, nearly half of all Republicans were elected from that region, defined as the 11 states of the Confederacy, plus Kentucky and Oklahoma. In each chamber, Southerners are a larger share of the Republican caucus than ever before. Similarly, beginning with the 1992 presidential election, the South has provided at least 59 percent of the Electoral College votes won by the GOP nominee, including by George W. Bush in his 2000 and 2004 victories. That percentage is nearly double the South's share of all Electoral College votes and by far the most that GOP presidential nominees have relied on the region over any sustained period.

Republican strength in the South has both compensated for and masked the extent of the GOP's decline elsewhere. By several key measures, the party is now weaker outside the South than at any time since the Depression; in some ways, it is weaker than ever before.

Today the GOP holds a smaller share of non-Southern seats in the House and Senate than at any other point in its history except the apex of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's popularity during the early days of the New Deal.

Tom Ridge sums up the problem with the GOP and why Rush Limbaugh is killing it. If Rush does not die in the next 10 years we will not have a two party system. Even if Rush dies within the next 10 years his legacy will be the morons he has brought to the party, therefore the GOP may not even survive even if Rush dies soon.

Of course someone in the GOP may have the balls to go against Rush without apologizing but I seriously doubt that any Republican has the balls to go against Rush.

Tom Ridge, on "State of the Union," warns of "shrill" voices within the Republican party. Asked about Rush Limbaugh, he says "if he would listen to me and I doubt if he would, the notion is express yourselves but let's respect others opinions and let's not be divisive… And let's be less shrill in terms of -- and particularly, let's not attack other individuals. Let's attack their ideas."

If the anti-Obama tea bag parties continue, birth certificate truthers stay active, Rush Limbaugh continues to lead the GOP, and crying "Socialism/Marxism/Communism", we will see the biggest landslide in Presidential history in 2012.

Not only that but it does the country a disservice because there will be no grown up opposition to Obama when he does dumb shit.

Someday we'll figure out that the whole republican vs. democrat system is a total failure. They are both corrupt, and eventually the democrats will fail and republicans will gain control again, and then they will fail again, and then the democrats will gain control again, etc.

Its an endless cycle until the people do something to change it.

I always thought what John Adams said that the two party system was full of fail is true. Of course they should have thought about run-off elections too because you can't have a viable multi-party system without it imho. Of course with the short attention span the American public has it probably doesn't matter in the end.

Or you could have a system where the top x people in an election become Representatives - and not winner-take-all by district. That by itself should help third parties.

You're thinking something along the lines of dividing up the number of reps an area has by a weighted percentage of the vote they or their party got. I believe that's a fundamental part of the parliamentary system the EU uses. FOr instance... A state has 50 representatives

Republicans win 40% = 20 reps
Democrats win 40% = 20 reps
Libertarians win 10% = 5 reps
Independents split the other 5 spots due to getting less than 5% each.

Anyone who YouTubes Shepard Smith's FOX clips will see he is one of the few rational people at FOX and the far right nuts all hate him for it. I am honestly worried that something bad may happen to him as "the right" and FOX goes further off the deep end.
