Romney needs to give it up. He comes off as a smug douche bag. This prevents him from winning the working white vote. To top it off he is Mormon which kills him in the south. He needs to buy a ranch in Texas, learn a fake accent, and become born again if he wants to have any shot.

When Pawlenty gets his job done in MN, if he can make a national name for himself, he's got a good chance I'd say. I'm pretty democrat, but I really think Pawlenty's got his head screwed on straight and could do some good things.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the way the party is headed at the moment. Hopefully 8 years of Obama ends the old ways though, and we can get some new blood with some reasonable ideas in office.

Looks like the Republicans may not even have the South locked up. This article confirms that the Republican party is no longer a National party. The collective electorial total in those few solid Republican states are insignificant.

Only five states had solid or leaning Republican orientations in 2008, with Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, and Alaska in the former group, and Nebraska in the latter.

The Republican party is the new Whig Party. Just one more "Magic Negro" incident and it will be a done deal. There is no way another one will not occur in the next 8 years. They just might even elect the guy behind the incident as the RNC Chairman...hopefully.

One of the states shown as leaning democratic was the only state in the union for 100% of it's counties to go republican.....many others carried double digit republican (in the presidential election) margins of victory and are shown as "competitive" ???

In the article itself it list states in the top 10 of republican states and has them shown on the map as competitve or leaning democratic???

Sounds like a lot of BS to me.

Texas for example is listed as competitive. We have 2 republican senators, a republican govenor, and McCain carried the state by 11% in an election where they republicans ran an extremely weak candidate....

I wonder how they judge how democratic it's leaning tho. For instance in my county it's voted 100% republican for president since Reagen. We have no registered republican voters at all nearly. The democrats are the only party who pays to have a primary so everyone registers democrat so they can vote in the primary. Lots of counties are like that around here.

The republicans loose 1 election 52/48and it's doom and gloom I see. I find it amusing.

The democrats better not bank on it or they may be reading the tea leaves incorrectly.

There was a brief bit about that on the BBC's US election coverage: Urban populations are going up all across the south, and rural populations are declining...well, the white rural population is.

Another decade of the same changes and Texas will be a coin-toss. Another two, and it'll be solid blue. The WASP demographic which is the Republican party's core is going to become a minority within the US by the middle of the 21st century so either the Republicans drop their "One (white, Christian) nation under (a white Christian version of) God" rhetoric, or they become a footnote.
