Merging this thread with another.

I heard these pills cause eye bleeds and anal leakage. But seriously, I don't personally understand why someone would pay for sex concentration. To me it's just a line I don't want to cross, because it says something about you I think.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing that prevents a medical doctor from "practicing psychology" (I'm not even sure what that would mean.) In my rotations for patients that were committed to the hospital we would have them undergo group therapy sessions, individual therapy, etc, in addition to administering psychiatry medications. We would listen to their problems, give them advice, and administer medication when necessary (or as some people would like to believe, when unnecessary!) As for as giving detailed cognitive behavioral therapy, etc, economically it makes more sense to dole out those long sessions to people on lower payscales while the psychiatrist sees patienst and makes money

I "practice psychology" on a daily basis. When someone comes in with Herpes I don't just give them Valtrex. These patients have so many worries. I talk to them about how to talk to their partner about it, how to be safe during sex, how to help prevent the spread of the disease, etc. They need to know they aren't some outcast that can't ever have sex again (a lot of people feel like that.) Likewise, with a terminal patient, I spend time sitting at their bedside and they have questions about the process of dying. The family wants to talk about it, etc.

I help people cope with and deal with their problems, all in addition to just "giving pills."

Well, perhaps it varies state to state. I did about 500 hours as an intern with a MFT, and both him and my supervising professor made it quite clear that you need to be licensed in Utah to practice psychotherapy. Minimum for that hear is at least a Masters degree in an applicable area, and then 4000 hours of supervised internship after you graduate.

And, my MD Psychiatrist who gives me pills has also said he is not licensed to practice psychotherapy and said they have a LCSW on staff who does it.

I have no idea what the education/licensing path for Psychiatrists is in Utah, I have never looked into it. What state are you licensed in? Every one is different.

I just know that here, you HAVE to have a dedicated MFT, LCSW, LPP (licensed psychology practicioner) license to call yourself a psychotherapist and to do "therapy" for people.

I know that doctors and psychiatrists clearly do tons of psychological counseling and give lots of guidance in that area, but I've never heard of an MD or Psychatrist not prescribing drugs, but doing ongoing weekly couples counseling for a married couple who is having relationship issues.

I guess I was just trying to point out that if you need drugs, see a doctor or psychiatrist. If you need to talk and cry for an hour a week about how your parents didn't love you, see a therapist.

So yesterday I had popped the first pill around 11am. By noon I was feeling pretty hyper, but yet able to focus a lot better than normal. I banged off some really boring shit that I'd been putting off for weeks in record time. By about 3-4pm the hyper feeling was receding pretty quickly, and by 5 I felt pretty normal.

This morning I took one at 9am, and don't have nearly the feeling of hyperness that I had yesterday, although I can still "feel" something's different. No idea about concentration or focus, it's Saturday and gorgeous out. But I do feel the urge to get some shit down around my house that I normally avoid, changing light bulbs etc, put away skis for the summer, and so on.

Even if most of this is "placebo" effect or me just convincing myself that I'm suddenly more motivated and able to focus on mundane tasks, I'm pretty happy with the result up to this point. But of course the big test will be how I'm able to work next week.

It's not a placebo effect, you're taking amphetamines. They're some of the strongest stimulants available, chemically identical to the shit that junkies load into their needles and shoot up until they go crazy and tear their skin out looking for bugs or CIA probes.

Honestly, I think it's fucked up that we prescribe this shit to people like candy. I don't deny that ADD is a real disorder that can impact peoples lives, but I think 95% of cases just need some therapy and a bit of discipline, not a nice little orange bottle of speed.

Oh, and where did you pull this 95% number from? Your ass?

Perhaps I don't really know what psychotherapy is. You aren't injecting the patient with anything, you aren't even touching them, you are just talking to them. Or is that wrong? (Wikipedia says basically anyone, including psychiatrists, practice psychotherapy) As an MD, I can do basically anything I want. I could decide to do brain surgery on you and even give you anesthesia myself. Sure, my malpractice insurance doesn't cover it and *when* I fuckup (and I would), you could sue me for everything under the sun, but there's really no limits. I can't imagine that I wouldn't be allowed to talk to a patient in a specific manner. I talk to patients about any and everything. I'm licensed in Louisiana.

I'm not arguing with you or being confrontational, I'm just trying to understand this. I'll talk to my attending Monday and get back to you.

I have to go with what some others are saying : You aren't motivated. My little brother has been on and off ADD/ADHD medicine for 5 years. The little fucker is just lazy and has never wanted to do school work, EVER. I can't say that AP classes in High school are as hard as college classes, simply b/c I haven't taken colleges classes... but what has always helped me drone shit out was to play music that I knew the words to in my Ipod. I wouldn't be listening to the music, it would just be in the back round as I finished reading 150 drawn out textbook pages a night.

Also, and this may just be my own thing, but I always do well in school after I workout. You may want to consider it at the very least.

Maybe as a MD with a medical degree you are qualified to do therapy with people in the laws eye. I have no idea since I always planned on getting the AAMFT (american associate of marriage and family therapists) license for marriage and family therapy. FAQs about Marriage and Family Therapy for the Public

Without that license, I couldn't say I am a Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Utah. Also, if I wanted to get a Psychology License, I'd need one from the APA (American Psychological Association) APAGS - Beyond internship, obtaining licensure

I really shouldn't even be in this conversation. I can't see any good coming between a talk between a guy with a bachelors degree in psychology, and a doctor.

In your post you said "I haven't taken colleges [sic] classes..." That's truly fascinating you were awarded a PhD (lol at P.H.D.) without attending college. Ever.

Ah, I see what you're saying and I agree. As an MD I can't say "I'm a licensed marriage and family counselor." If I were seeing a patient who complained excessively about his marriage, I would give a little counseling (mere minutes), recommend he see someone who specializes in dealing with that sort of thing, ask if they have any other complaints then end the visit. (Then I'd mark the billing up one level on his visit for that day! kidding)

Yeah that's what I sorta meant. When I tell people what I want to get for a license, I compare it to cutting hair. In Utah, you need a cosmotology license to cut hair professionally. You can do it without of of course, but the state will fine you.

What are residencies for then? Even if your insurance did cover it, I'm not sure anyone would let you do brain surgery without years of experience.

Also, I'm not sure you can claim to do any sort of "psychotherapy." It's like saying you're a bartender who read about cognitive therapy and tried to help your customers with their problems. Anyone can talk to a stranger about their problems, but the sort of therapy people are referring to works through a span of time, where the patient would have regular visits, and the psychiatrist would record progress.
