Running Shoes

Right, I need a pair of good running shoes. Should this be in the Sports or Product Review section? I don't know.

I don't want to spent a lot; under $100 would be preferred. I used to trail run but never pavement, so I'm not sure the good brands. I'm looking primarily for comfort, then durability. I don't give a shit what they look like as long as they aren't flamboyantly gay (non-flamboyantly gay is okay though!).

Also, I went into a shoe store just a bit ago and measured my foot; it's JUST under a 13 in US Men's (like a centimeter short). Should I be aiming at a size 14 with that?

Thanks.

If you're actually going to be running with them, I'd strongly recommend you go to a jogging/running store and have them observe your stride and so on, hear about any past problems you've had, and choose a pair of shoes that suits you. It's worthwhile.

I always gravitate towards New Balance for running but all of my hardcore running friends (that did track in High School/College) prefer Asics.

Bottom line is if you want a good pair of running shoes you shouldn't be paying less than $80... unless you do some clearance rack shopping or stumble upon a great sale.

Training shoes I would go with UnderArmor. New Balance the Last year or two has sucked. I would check out Nike or Asics for more than 6 miles runs

I would suggest doing some research and hitting up a reputable shoe store. Start by reading these: Choosing a Shoe: The Very Basics - Runner's World Shoes & How to Choose Running Shoes!

As a general rule, I would stay away from shoes with air cushion, especially in the heel area. Any type of uneven cushion can cause too much calf flex on impact and lead to early cramping.

Personally, my favorite brand is asics although they tend to wear out quicker than other brands. The perfect brand or shoe will change from person to person, so just buy the pair that works for you.

*Also, stay the fuck away from cross-trainers. Buy a shoe for the specific activity you plan to use it for.

Do you overpronate? If you do I recommend NB1224. Real comfortable for long runs.

I did this last year and it's definitely worth it. Ended up with a pair of Asics.

I have a pair of 40$ sketchers wide running shoes that I got in a 2-for-1 deal. I've yet to ruin myself running in them; why all this talk about super fancy running shoes and specialty stores?

I've never really thought about my shoes much past "do they fit alright?" as I pretty much have paddles for feet and am lucky to even find shoes that fit me.

I have normal shaped feet (no flat or super-curve or anything) but I'm about 6'6 and have a 13-14 size foot. Would my height/foot size affect anything here?

I did one of those sites linked above and they recommended the Asics GEL-1130 based on my answers. This is for short-distance jogging, purely for exercise.

It's a great shoe (I used the older model for mid-distance training in high school), but under serious duress it probably has a lifespan of ~4 months. I would try to stick with a shoe that limits flex, and given your shoe size, that means a stiffer sole. The shoe you linked should work just fine; just make sure to try them on and "jog" around the store before you buy them. Don't order them online. Go retail.

If you don't run that often or train to improve your times, you probably won't notice that much of a difference. A running shoe can really make or break you if you're serious about the sport. I learned that lesson when I bought a pair of New Balance 892's. After breaking them in they cut a hole so deep on the back of my heel that I still bleed when I run, and I had to eventually scrap them because my legs cramped so fucking bad I could barely make it past the first mile. When I went back to the Asics the problems were solved.

I just run for cardio right now, rarely more than 2-3 miles at a time. Is there really something to be gained by a higher quality shoe for us folks who aren't marathon running?

In my opinion, yes. Running generates an incredible amount of impact. A good shoe is the only defense you have between that impact and a potential injury. If you already run with perfect form, you might not notice much of a difference. If you're one of 99% of the people that don't have perfect form, a great shoe can keep you injury free. Personally, I've noticed a difference with cramps, shin splints, ankle injuries and blisters. With time, impact injuries can wreak havoc on your feet and joints. If you buy last year's models you won't see much of a price increase over what you're using now. Even if you pay $20 or more over the shoe you're currently using, I think you'll notice the long-term benefits.

*Fuck, I sound like Billy Mays.

We used some pretty basic new balance in boot camp, and they were pretty comfy actually.

Been using new balance ever since.
