Best ISP for heavy users?

So I am a heavy downloader, and I am using Comcast. The new download cap of 250gb sucks. And Comcast has also throttled down speeds of heavy users. It makes no sense to use NewsGroups when my speed and bandwidth are limited. I have cancelled my newsgroup subscription.

A few questions:

1- I heard that in general phone companies are better, as they don't care about too many gigs being downloaded, as well as not throttling down speed?

2- If this is true, what phone companies are the best?

Thanks in advance for some timely info. I plan on switching ISP's in the before the month is up.

Dunno if you can get Time Warner cable, but here in Austin I generally transfer WAY more than 250gb a month and have yet to ever get a bandwith cap, or notice.

edit: I get digital cable with HD DVR, telephone service, and the internet in a package for $108 a month.

Same here, I have Roadrunner and I transfer a lot more than 250gb as well, and have never received any notice or been throttled at all.

Verizon FIOS if it's available. No throttling, no caps, no DMCA bullshit.

But be warned that whatever service you do switch to, be sure to research the contractor quality for installations in your area. 90% of the initial problems with a service come from bad installs done by absurd idiots

+1

I got FIOS earlier this year and it's fucking awesome. I've had almost no issues with the service, and the price is only slightly higher than my Comcast was previously. Oh, and you can get a 10$/mo discount if you have any other Verizon services (Cell phone/IPTV/Landline)

Brings the price for 14mb up/down to 55$ + taxes per month.

I have Road-Runner Turbo and they will throttle you too.

I maxed my upload for about a month and now I can't DL aove 400kbs(when I used to get 1.5Mbs pretty consistently except when limited by the other end of the connection).

Pretty lame since I pay extra on top of the standard fees for a broader connection.

I think the reason DSL companies don't care is that #1, their infrastructure is totally different and the shared connection aspect isn't as much an issue, and #2 at least in the U.S.A. DSL speeds are so slow that even running 24/7 you can't get really high numbers anyways.

Varies a lot by area though, least where I live you can't get DSL above 3mbs where cable goes up to 30mbs and 50mbs Fios is "near-by"

Where abouts? I've been downloading/uploading every day this month (Roughly 1.5tb bandwidth use so far this month), and am still unthrottled.

So if theres a cap, its so high, I never see it.

Absolutely another vote for FIOS if available. I've done over a TB down and 200-300gb up in a month for months at a time before. Never gotten a call, a throttle or a cap. 45 bucks a month also for it.

Optimum Online is crazy good in this area. They started up a little rough but after some serious storms and some serious work on the lines, they made a complete turn-around and the service has been phenomenal ever since.

But that's only NY/NJ and some parts of CT/PA. Not sure where you are.

Insight in KY/IN has been good so far at a few different houses I've lived at. They called me up once at my current house to ask about some suspicious activity, I told them I was uploading stuff to my server and it was a one time thing. Apparently they were worried it might've been a virus. I haven't slowed down at all though and they haven't called back in about a year. They did call once when my roommate was downloading knocked up though.
