If Ron Paul was the GOP Candidate, Would He Be Higher in the Polls than McCain Is?

So if instead of McCain the GOP chose Ron Paul, would the GOP have higher poll values and a higher chance of being elected?

I say yes just because Ron Paul would have a more convincing economic platform and Obama wouldn't be able to put as much blame on him as he is on McCain.

Probably not. He'd start talking about fractional reserve banking systems and the entire population of the US would change the channel in unison.

I put not sure. I think Paul would really shine on the economy. I think his social stances would really hurt him with the Republican base, and I just cannot see him picking Palin or someone like her.

I think Obama certainly wouldn't be doing as well, but I'm not sure if Paul would be doing better than McCain or not.

I think a better poll would be Romney with Ron Paul as VP.

That's a republican ticket I would very much support. Ron Paul could definately work as VP, but I think some of his views are a little to extreme to be president.

Romney would have better standing, a better VP pick, and a better debate performance.

At worst he would be slightly above McCain's numbers. At best he could theoretically be winning it.

He would be doing worse overall. I think in certain states, especially in the west, he may do better than McCain. Paul doesn't bullshit and sugar coat things enough to be a mainstream contender. Plus some of his views aren't appealing to the so called swing voters in the rust belt states.

I am as huge a Paul supporter as there is, and I put not sure. As well as Paul would do, he would have difficulty explaining to people why current Republicans are not true conservatives.

If this financial crisis had finally manifested around the time of the primaries, then I seriously cannot invision either a very close race to get the nomination, or a situation similiar to that of when Ross Perot ran.

Paul has a lot of the views that are typically Republican, he fucked himself in the party with Iraq and all being such a big deal when he said our meddling brought some of the hate and blame for 9/11 and other things on our own heads. If that was obscured by his beliefs on the economy, I think the primary race would be between him and Romney and Paul would have been very competitive.

One of his main problems was that he NEVER gets enough good air time, even with the Republican base. The snub of the RNC was fucking disgraceful, and looking back now I wonder how much capital they would have gained with him in the corner.

So yes, if everything worked out and people actually hear him speak at length and he has a unique plan on the economy, I think he would be way ahead in the polls. Listen to him speak, on foreign policy and economics he has a lot of ideas that I would think could capture independent voters.

Voted strong yes, I think the current enviroment is one where he would of shined. Unlike even Obama, it's obvious that Ron Paul actually knows a lot about the economy on a personal level.

Ron Paul is unwilling to sell his soul so he will never be president.

He would be doing much worse than McCain at this point.

Christian conservatives have something against the gold standard. They claim he's an 'idol worshipper.'

I voted weak yes. This is my feeling as well. I think it's fairly likely that he would be wiping the floor with Obama right now about the financial crisis among Democrats and Independents, and they would outweigh the Republicans that wouldn't support him who are currently supporting McCain. Especially since Obama has brought in so many new voters who would be likely to sway in the direction of Paul.

I really doubt he would win though.

When does he come up for re-election. He better find a new job before then. I'm not sure he will keep his current job considering how many pissed off people in his district I read about because he wanted no federal money spent at all on the Brazoria/Galveston area after Ike...including FEMA.
