i will be applying at nyu stern for sure, and then maybes: cornell - safety. not the best ranking, ithaca could be horrible chicago - great for finance but i don't wanna move away from all my friends in the NE mit - small program and i hear boston not so great wharton - my dream school but i probably won't bother, too competitive to get into cbs - i'd love to go here, but i don't know about reapplying. are you doing ED for CBS reapp? | ||

+3 Internets | Nah, I'm just doing regular for CBS. I did early decision last year though, obviously that didn't help much. Reg decision for CBS is sometime in January this year, which in my mind positions them as the "backup school of choice" for all those that don't make it to H/S/W/Chicago. I get the weird impression that they are trying to game the ranking process by increasing their yield in this fashion. I would be interested to compare info with you about our apps to Columbia last year. I thought I had a fighting chance to at least get an interview. My only thought was that my work experience was light vs all the laid off IBankers that were bound to be applying. I agree about the other schools you listed too. I thought about Wharton but decided to pass since it is hyper competitive and employers appear to regard it as a great place to find high quality number crunchers and analysts. There doesn't seem to be a lot of leadership coming out of Wharton. Good to know that there is someone else in my shoe's.

| >2002 join = n00b | I was surprised to not get an interview as well, but I guess no one applies not expecting to get one :P Last year I would've had 3 yrs w/e at matriculation as a trader at a couple smaller commercial banks. this year i'll have made close to 100k and i have another year of work experience, so hopefully those things will help to tip the scales. my essays indicated that i want to go back into trading after b-school, and with the financial world melting down it was just probably bad timing. i'm going to do the same thing this year though, heh. my biggest issues are low quant on the gmat (75th percentile) and a really bad undergrad gpa from a super non competitive school. i'm probably gonna take calc 1 in september. if i get an a in that, it'll show that i'm able to handle the quantitative material in the program. |

+3 Internets | Sounds like we have very similar stats. Kind of creepy actually. 76th percentile Quant here, which is why I wanted to get the CFA Level 1 done before re-apping this year. My work experience has been 1 year in retail brokerage right out of school and the last 2 (3 by matriculation) at the headquarters of Sunrise Senior Living doing financial planning and budgeting for the first year. After the first year I was individually selected to work alongside a director level person to design and implement a company-wide internal financial reporting system to make sense of the immense volume of data that we have in our accounting system. My job has taken a decided IT skew in the last year which I think strengthens my app as a dynamic person that can get the job done and wants to gain more business insight to transition to management with an MBA. This is good practice for my essays ;P

+3 Internets | I live in Washington DC now. I'm looking forward to moving pretty much anywhere else. I've been in this area for most of my life and I'm ready to go somewhere else, and the traffic is annoying as hell. I think with an undeergrad degree in finance (I assume thats what you got as well) quant skills aren't typically suspect. I spent too long on a math question on the GMAT and had to rush through the last part of the quant section and messed up my score a little bit. Even so, I think that my ability to handle MBA quant material should be proven with the combination of the degree and CFA. At any rate I'm not taking the god forsaken GMAT again. Nor am I going to take calculus for a 3rd time.

| >2002 join = n00b | hate to say it, but i think the quant aspect of the gmat is really important regardless of other qualifications. i am gonna try to take calculus 1 in september, damnit. i just have to go to b-school! bleh, maybe i'll be lazy :P i was just in dc. georgetown seemed nice, but on the whole it was maybe not the most exciting place. |

| I had some free time today so I took everything from US News 2009 MBA Rankings and put it into a spreadsheet. The sorting at US News sucks my balls so this fixed my problem! Just rename the file to .xls and you're good to go. As a disclaimer don't blame me if my computer gives your computer aids. Edit: It's txt because there is no xls upload allowed. Edit 2: For anyone who uses this to look at salary data you have to realize it can be off quite a bit because the sample size usually sucks. For example at Babson, while I'm sure it's a great school, only 25% of the outgoing students reported salary data. Mays on the other hand had every single student report salary data. GMAT Friday for me.................... It's going to be interesting. If I score high enough I might have a decent story for a higher ranked school (3.7 GPA while working nights full time & school full time + taking more classes since graduation), but unfortunately I work in financial services like every other retard applying to Bschool. | Bleh, I'm retaking it. I'm going to be cutting it super close on apps. 95th percentile verbal, quant fucking bombed...... GOGO ME! I guess I'm going to have to put my game face on for the next 31 days and study my ass off on quant. I'm so not thrilled at this very moment. I knew I should have went to law school instead.............. Last edited by prescient63; 08-14-2009 at 12:57 PM.. |
