Train Collision being attributed to Texting

Texting banned on California trains after deadly crash - CNN.com

So they're blaming the cell phone and text messaging for the accident. for trains colliding.

Things I don't understand
How 1 person can be incharge of a train and can make decisions that could cause it to crash? Shouldn't there be computerized fail safes? some sort of warning? Is this entirely based on whether or not 1 person notices a stop signal and decides to plow through it?

Why texting is being cited as the problem and not the employees incompetence. Article says that the guy took a 2 hour nap during his lunch break, if that's true, who else is watching the train?

I think this is just a plain case of the guy was an idiot. How engrossed are you with text messages that you fail to notice shit? and you should know your route well enough so you don't decide to start texting when you're coming to a critical intersection.

Do you really want Skynet in charge of your trains? What if it decides that this train DOESNT DESERVE TO LIVE?

Supposedly alerts were triggered at the safety monitoring agency that monitors railway traffic signals in California, but they were either too slow or too inept to text the retarded engineer in time. Or they were hunting & pecking, that slows down text messages.

You do realize every single jet in production comes with tons of computer fail safes? didnt you watch that mythbusters where adam and jamie were able to land a plane purely by instructions from the air traffic controller? the controller explained that planes are so automated now they can pretty much do the whole flight on their own including landing.

Learn to read imo. Taking a 2 hour nap during your lunch break kinda implies your lunch break was atleast 2 hours. (Probably is an inbound/outbound once a day train)

All trains should be designed so that their "operators" can do this

Some trains already have automated systems like the ones you mentioned. This one didnt because it cost too much...

The guy operating the freight train is in my bowling league and he said that once he saw what was going to happen he had enough time to hit the emergency breaks and run for the back of the train. So clearly the engineer of the Metrolink should of had enough time to react which makes me believe he wasn't paying attention or didn't give a fuck.

The question is, who's watching the train during his 2 hour lunch break? Are there 2 engineers on the train? If there are 2 engineers, what was the 2nd engineer doing at the time? if there isn't 2 engineers, who watches the train when he's napping?

You can nap in the office during a lunch break. You can't nap if you're supposed to be watching a mother fucking train. Seems like bad practices all around.

Also, from what I recall hearing the other day, the train company was extremely quick to blame to blame the driver, and in response the governing body said it was far too early to make any determination on the cause. Maybe more information is out now, but it still makes me personally wonder if the company is trying to hide something. /shrug

Well the engineer wasn't even an official employee, he was only a subcontractor, so there might be some kind of certification or training cover-up?
