I definitely have to help emphasize that 4chan (and anonymous) isn't a group. if anything it's a mob. Not a mafia mob, but an unruly mob, a belligerent group of folks looking for pure entertainment that will use its anonymity to goad the most crazy visitors to do whatever. Some of the visitors are super hacker awesome guys, and some are kids posting from their parents computers who just think it's funny to lol at random pictures and call people faggots.

But it's mob rule. some times you can show up and say "hay guys, i hate this guy" and the mob will decline to be interested, saying they aren't your personal army, or they'll trace the information of the poster and ridicule him instead. Some times when it's in the mood, the mob will join in a crusade just for shits and giggles (like they did for Scientology).

Like Arbuste said though, most of the time they're content to post muddy dicks, or pictures of underage girls puking in each other's mouth, or whatever else they can do to raise the bar of what's shocking....but you can bet when some one does something like post Palin's email information, they're doing it to see what lols can be produced, and a lot of people there hang around for specifically this sort of situation. For the epic lols.

On an unrelated note, I saw Spamalot on Broadway the other night. From talking with the friend I went with, the head Knight of Ni will say something random and unscripted every single show in an attempt to get someone in the cast to crack up. When I saw it, he announced he was the father of Sarah Palin daughter's baby. It elicited alot of lawls from the audience.

To be fair to him, I saw what he wrote about it and he looked through every email and it was all boring shit.

I also remember Lincoln Logs. I don't recall ever having 'trouble' with them, but apparently that was too sophisticated for the host.

UPDATE: In a rather bizarre new development, it turns out the prime suspect in this case lives a few hundred yards down from me. He was a b-tard going to school here at the University of Tennessee and supposedly claimed responsibility for the e-mail intrusion (since people get so pissy about it being called a hack). I was at a party nearby when all this shit happened:

WBIR.com | Knoxville, TN | Update: FBI serves search warrant against UT student in Palin case

Turns out he's Mike Kernell's son, a state Representative and, yes, a democrat as well. How funny. I always knew there were /b/ denizens lurking moar on my campus, but never figured one of them would be a local politician's son and live within a stone's throw of me.

Just, wow. I'm really glad I was too drunk to stray from the party, the FBI nabbing me by mistake would been a horrible cap off of a weekend that involved a horrific loss to Florida and lots and lots of fights....

Best is reading the comments on that link. People are insane. They want him strung up and punished to the full extent of the law, and how it's right that the FBI is investigating a yahoo account being hacked? Seriously? It's fucking yahoo!

While they're at it, they should sue him for all of the mp3s and youtube flvs saved on his computer.

Worst of all is its not even some huge "hack".

Quote:
"Rubico" made the claim in an internet posting. This person said it was easy to access Palin's yahoo account by using information like her zip code and birthdate.
Zip code and birthdate? How fucking stupid are you when youre in a position of power like she is to use something so transparent?

Anyone else find it retardly ironic that any joe schmo could call all day long to the FBI about their account being hacked and they wouldn't lift a finger? "It's a yahoo account, fuck off dipshit" but if you're a fucking politician.. Oh My! GETTEM!

This has got to be one of the biggest cases hypocrisy ever.

Yes, but Sarah Palin is also protected full time by the US Secret Services right now. She's a potential VP, and the Governor of Alaska. There *might* be sensitive info in some of her e-mails.
A FBI investigation is actually warranted in my opinion.

That said, she should have her ass kicked for (illegally) using a Yahoo e-mail to send / receive that potentially sensitive info.
