They just showed the tail end of McCain's press conference on CNN, they were showing Ahmadinajsjkashdlafsdjh's speech at the UN. The press conference seemed pretty standard, I'm not sure why McCain is hiding from the press but it certainly doesn't look good. He's had one single press conference in 6 weeks and he is restricting acces to Palin to the absolute extreme.

Just once, I'd really like to compare the difference between percentages obtained by simply asking "do you approve of the job the congress is doing?" with the averaged approval ratings for each individual member (voted on by their constituents).

I agree that normally the way to teach others is to let them see others fail. That works beatifully as long as we can manage the amount of debt coming in and going out the system. We simply cannot manage millions of people bankrupting on 200-400k loans. We can't. It's to much.


Plus as seen with the great depression it doesn't actually work. Teaching the lesson that is. As we are right back here knocking on depressions door. if we are learning a lesson about staying away from depression then maybe then lesson isn't letting people fail and fail and fail till they learn (which we see hasn't worked). Maybe the lesson is taking preventive measures to stop the fail in the first place.

Creed the great depression was an attepmt to let the market fix itself and teach people their lesson. Yet here we are back at the door all over again.

Couple points. I'm drinking some nice beer tonight, so I'm chill.

Causes of the Great Depression

1.) The Great Depression wasn't just one or two bad decisions. We slid into it over the course of four years.

2.) The Federal Reserve System was new, and the banking regulations were new. The fed withheld liquidity from the system, causing some institutions to go down who were solid.. actually solid, not like the shit today.

3.) Taxes were raised.

4.) Tariffs were raised on imported goods which caused other countries to retaliate.

5.) The primary cause was a huge expansion of credit, a bubble that popped, and the fallout from that.


It didn't work.

1.) It did work, people's savings rate went through the roof and stayed there. Their children's savings rate was high. Their children's children's saving rate has been medium to negative. Their children's children's children don't think saving is a good idea and that you finance your lifestyle through debt.

2.) I don't have a 2, see 1. Well, I guess we could examine the recessions over the years, the post war recessions were normal recessions, severe, and taught people lessons. Hence the generation following the Great D people still learned. Starting in the 70's we really started to paper over the bad of recessions.. and you can see how the quality of people's financial decisions has declined every since.

Finally, I'd say that while the cost of letting a bunch of people hit the wall now will be huge. If we don't let them hit the wall, the next time it will be worse. People will leverage even farther, take on even more debt, because now they know the government will ride in to the rescue. We can pay now, or we can pay more later.
