Heh, satellite services are typically capped around 5-7 gigs a month or even worse. As someone who is most likely going to be switching from Comcast to satellite, I am going to miss Comcast a lot.

I think that was the point...

Damn, even cellular internet sounds better then that. I think sean used to have that kind of internet connection. I was kind of thinking of getting it too, if i end up getting a job roaming around needing internet for a laptop. Don't think sprint has that kind of limit at least.

If you live far enough out in the sticks it's the only option though. At my Mom's house there's no cell coverage, and the phone lines are so old that you can only get 24.4k dialup heh.

Keep in mind all cellular companies have caps now. Sprint was the last 'unlimited' and now has a 50 gig limit.

Don't mean to necro but didn't think this deserved its own thread. I just moved to Chico, CA and they only have Comcast here. Do I need to worry about the amount I download or worry about downloading from places like pirate bay? I heard they work close with the RIAA on copywrite shit.

I was wondering what could have possibly brought this thread back from the dead...

Unless you are a very heavy torrent user, you probably won't exceed 250GB/month in bandwidth. If you are, then I guess you should pay attention to how much data you're transferring.

They don't work with the RIAA any more than the other major ISPs do, as far as I know. Using The Pirate Bay is not the best choice when torrenting. Go for private trackers if you can. Also, make sure you use PeerGuardian2. It doesn't make you immune to trouble, but it helps to some extent.

If you're worried about RIAA and throttling check out this site.

http://www.superchargemytorrent.com/

I've used it for about 6 months now

Bit late to this thread but if you live in one of the 4-5 cities that has it I can vouch for Clear's Wimax service. I've had it for 2.5 months now and it's been almost as good as a wired connection (minus hiccups every few days). It's like 20 bucks for the cheapest connection, but 20 bucks well-spent to not have to put up with Comcast's bullshit.

So I just moved into a new apartment and the only cable that they offer is Comcast. So far I haven't had any problems with torrents and I wasn't told about any kind of a cap I'm guessing mines also set at 250 gb's a month.

Should I expect to have problems or is their "bullshit" grossly exaggerated?

I wouldn't say it's exaggerated, but depending on your usage you may not notice it. You'll have a 250GB cap and pretty much every cable company in the country oversells so getting the exact speed you're paying for will be difficult without using a shitload of connections. I have to use 20 nntp connections where I live.

Yeah I don't get how people download so much. The torrent tracker site I download porn of keeps track of this stuff and I've only downloaded 110gb in the last 4 years...

You want to clarify that? I'm supposed to be getting an extra ~10 Mb down from Cox, just signed up with them, and if there is something I can do outside of calling them and bitching that'd be awesome.
