For reference, I was a former Comcast TV/Internet customer. Are you still using AOL?

| 50gig cap here in a 7 person household, and we rarely break that despite fairly substantial downloading. Yeah Aussie internet blows chunks, but you guys need to stop being such girls. 250gig is so much more than anyone can actually use reasonably. |

With HD video, games, everything requires more bandwidth every year. In 5 years it's going to be substantially higher, in 10 years even more. Just like it was 10 years ago compared to now (was anyone even downloading movies in 1998?). As long as computers keep growing the need for data will keep growing. This is a move that will let cable and telephone companies milk people for even more money, if these limits stand. I'm hoping they don't. They're archaic. They're like the phone company charging you 10 cents per text message when a text is such a tiny amount of data it's ridiculous. I'm still hoping that Google will ride in on a white horse and save us with Googlenet if it ever gets that bad (remember the Google-internet-within-the-internet rumors from last year? I can dream. And they seem so ultra powerful sometimes that it doesn't even seem like that much of a fantasy).

Also, someone made a point about stealing, but watching TV/movies online is becoming more and more legit. There are a lot of sites where you can stream TV shows in high quality already. Networks are doing it more and more (adding commercials so they get their revenue). So it's not just thieves who have something to worry about here. I personally watch all my favorite shows on the computer instead of the TV; the quality is way better, I've got my bigass headphones for better sound, and I can pause it when I gotta pee. At the moment I have to torrent most shows, but, when the networks make them available to stream, I'll probably do that instead (unless it's a show that I want to keep a copy of, like House. But most I just watch then delete once I'm done seeding).

As far as illegal stuff goes, a year ago I'd guess that 99% of the media I got online was illegal (torrent mostly). That is down to about 50% now as I find it easier to stream things legitimately. As advertising continues to catch up with online media, then I think everyone would agree that illegal downloading will decrease and streaming will go up. The point is that you can't just say "well the caps are fine as long as you aren't downloading illegally". Usage is usage and the legality of it is just a short-term issue.
