250GB is less than unlimited but it's much more than 99.9% people need and it's much more than competing cable companies are offering as their cap. I also like how people say 'zomg we don't want this to be a slippery slopez!' then go on to make absolutely retarded slippery slope arguments. Fucking classic.

| I can dance if I want to | How much exactly does it cost ISPs for bandwidth anyways? I get multi-terrabyte bandwidth rates from my web host on my $9.95/m plan. Usenet gives you terrabyte+ for around the same price. I pay $50+ for internet and somehow 300gb makes them lose money? Someone explain this to me please. I realize the bigger issue is in bandwidth hogging, but who the fuck cares? as a consumer *that isn't our problem* the ISPs over-sold and the responsability for it rests on them, not us. They should be upgrading their services to meet what they offered to begin with, no imposing caps to continue offering an inferior product. |

+13 Internets | This is the real heart of the issue. I doubt anyone has ever actually gotten the advertised speed out of their Comcast connection, but they just keep signing up new subscribers as fast as they can. It's finally gotten to a breaking point and they have to start throttling down on people because they have easily twice or three times as many connections running as they should given their old as shit infrastructure.

| My Comcast connection is only limited by the bandwidth on the other end. Good torrents, newsgroups, high bandwidth file servers and everything always max out my connection no matter what time or day it is.

+20 Internets | The thing is that bandwidth is not unlimited. Usage is also increasing FAR faster then new technology that can support it. Even without caps, the internet will cap itself, and everyone on it because there will not be enough bandwidth to support everyone. They simply cannot offer unlimited bandwidth to everyone forever. The caps help keeps everyone's speeds faster, since you dont have the top teir guys hogging most it. I remember reading somewhere that like the top 3% of users use up over 50% of the total bandwidth. That is obscene. And how many of those 3% are actually using that much bandwidth for 'legit' purposes? Probably like 1 guy who REALLY likes netflix. And you also have to think, why upgrade your entire infrastructure to please the top 3% of users? If speeds are dropping, you can either cap it for free and upset 3% of your user base, or spend billions upgrading now to please the small minority. This is a business after all. And its funny you mention oversold. Would you be less pissed off if instead of putting in a 250GB cap, they told you their sold out of the internet in your area, and you get NOTHING? |

+20 Internets | So in the magical land of Europe they have servers capable of handling unlimited traffic for an unlimited number of people? Or perhaps there just are not as many people using whatever service is offered in Europe therefore they can keep the caps off longer? Think of it like traffic roads. You take your local freeway, which everyone is on, and it fucking drags. Or you find this backroad (different internet company) where you can go as fast as you want! Awesome! But soon everyone starts hearing about this magical road of unlimited speed and they drive over there, and suddenly your super fast road is clogged up just like the old shitty freeway. Usage will keep increasing and increasing. I think it just about doubles, or more every year. Europe may be fine now, and maybe for the next 2 or 3 years, but soon they will be clogged just like everyone else. |

| I know 250gb is a high number, but for gamers and those of us who download movies via Tivo or PS3 video download in HD, this cap is shit. Games: Warhammer Beta 10gb Conan Beta 10GB random patches per month (~ 15gb) 2 HD movies ~ 100GB that takes me up to ~ 135GB now, i have 3 Tivos which DL content, i have a 360 and a PS3 where i download demos and videos.... i can easily reach 250GB in less then a month without even trying. This is equivalent to Comcast saying... okay, well we know you have Cable TV but you are only allowed to watch 20 hours a month, after that we warn you that you are watching too much TV... what? excuse me? who the hell are you to tell me how much i can watch.

You watching more TV doesn't limit your neighbor from watching TV. You downloading megafiles 24/7 DOES limit your neighbors ability to download. They are completely not the same at all. Should the infrastructure be better? Of course. And Europe admittedly does have better structure in some areas due to population density. At least we have alternatives. Don't like the cable limit? Go to DSL, satellite or dialup.

| Comcast is a Sizzler who promoted "All You Can Eat" buffet to everyone they could get their claws on. But they never increased the size of their buffet and ended up with too many customers paying for the same 'unlimited' amount when in reality they had limited food. Their solution? Wait until you are in the store and have already paid (x year contract), then set limits on how much you can eat.
