While its been shown that Nvidia does have TWIMTBP on a lot of MMOs and games, the 4850 has shown it can beat the 9800GTX even in those games. The only real game that is biased heavily towards Nvidia is Lost Planet, but ATI has Call of Juarez for that to make up. Otherwise, ATI does seem to take a bit longer to get their drivers up to par for each game, but in the end they age well.

Preliminary 4870 results shown it beating the GTX 260 across the board actually... methinks Nvidia is in need of a price drop.

Since the thread got killed I'll start off with a sample build.

Here is a $1500 build I came up with. I went for performance plus quietness.

Newegg.com - Pioneer Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 10X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 40X CD-R 32X CD-RW 40X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE 20X DVD±R DVD Burner - CD / DVD Burners
Newegg.com - Antec Performance One P180 Silver cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases
Newegg.com - Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Internal Hard Drives
Newegg.com - PC Power & Cooling S75QB 750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply 100 - 240 V UL, ULC, CE, CB, RoHS - Power Supplies
Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory
Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS4 LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards
Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER RR-CCH-LB12-GP 120mm Sleeve CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks
Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor - CPUs / Processors
Newegg.com - MSI R4850-T2D512 Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

Maybe save $200 on the CPU and go for a better video card. That's a basic setup I'd start with though, which runs for 1550 or so.

I've seen this before. The drive is most likely bad. Just buy a new one...they're like 20 bucks.

As for your other issues, I would just wipe your system completely and do a fresh reinstall of Windows. Download all the latest drivers for EVERYTHING (chipset, video, audio, etc. and from the chipset manufacturer not the manufacturer of the component [example: get the Realtek audio drivers from Realtek and not from, say, Gigabyte]) beforehand and install those right after Windows finishes installing. Reboot after each driver install, by the way. Don't install them all during the same session.

Alright... I'll get a new DVD-ROM... I have a question though... while I was looking for the DVD-ROM I came across this:
Newegg.com - LG Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 4X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 5X DVD-RAM DVD-ROM: 16X Blu-ray DVD-ROM: 6X HD DVD-ROM: 3X DVD-ROM 40X CD-R 24X CD-RW 4MB Cache SATA Blu-ray/HD DVD-ROM & 16X DVD±R DVD Burner - CD / DVD Burners

Is there any reason why I should not get that? I have been wanting to get a Blue Ray player since I am subscribed to netflix and I have a monitor that supports 1080i.... I didn't know if I should get this or just buy a PS3/wait for an Xbox360 blue ray to come out. Also, I wonder if there is any way to stream blue ray quality from my desktop, to the laptop, so I can watch it on the TV (no way I am going to move my desktop every time I want to watch a movie )

If your card has an HDMI out you could run that to your TV, I'm not sure if there's a simpler way without more hardware.

Also Hachima for that build, is there any reason to get the X48 over a P35? I forget what the differences are now, but I seem to remember them being questionable since the X48s cost more than twice as much as most P35s.

Well, my laptops does have HDMI out, which is why I want to stream it to that computer in order to get the HD quality... But the laptop doesn't have a blue ray drive... I want to know if I can watch Blue ray movies through my laptop by getting a blue ray on my desktop. Maybe.... rip the blue ray movies, then stream em to my laptop? I can probably do this... but I would like to know if I can do this without having to rip the movies.

I just meant a straight HDMI cable from your desktop to the TV. I think also ripping them on the desktop, then copying it to the laptop and watching it on the TV through a DVI cable (since it doesn't have HDMI out) would work, but I'm not 100%.

My desktop is way to far from the TV to run a cable. But I guess ill go the "rip" way. I guess I am going to need another Hard Drive :X

P35 has a 1333 bus (some list 1600 but may be from overclocking) X48 is 1600 native.

P35 uses PCI-E 1.0 x48 uses 2.0

Intel® X48 Express Chipset - Overview

Intel® P35 Express Chipset - Overview

The biggest thing is X48 has the 2 PCI-E 2.0 x16 slots for crossfire potential (I think SLI/Crossfire still suck for a lot of things but that potential is there)

P35 is a great board too though and may be even better for overclocking potential

P45 has PCI-E 2.0

Even then, X48 still looks like it can perform better at least with crossfire.

Intel P45 Vs. X48 Crossfire Performance :: TweakTown

The biggest thing is "While both boards carry two physical x16 slots, when two cards are installed the electronics behind the slots on the P45 tune back to x8 on both slots. "

I seem to remember that PCIe 2.0 wasn't really necessary at the moment as PCIe still had plenty of bandwidth. I couldn't really remember but Tom's seems to kind of back it up: Conclusion - Tom's Hardware : PCI Express 2.0 Graphics Cards Tested
Not too much of a difference between the x16 and the x8 speeds at all. I agree with you about SLI/Crossfire and probably won't go that route ever, but the potential is helpful. So I guess the biggest benefit is the 1600 FSB. Damn I don't like thinking about this.

Today was release day for the ATI 4870 and it looks like its been a clean sweep for the 4870.. it matches the GTX260 across the board and with 8xAA on, it even beats the GTX280 in almost all setups. Games where CrossFire scales well, the 4850's and 4870s seem to scale up towards 80%.

-50 for going with 2GB Ram,
-350 for going with a $200 Dual Core
-100 for going with a P35 MB
