Well, I want to OC it. I know I got the power and cooling system to support it. I want to aim for at least 3.6GHz.

Having a little issue with one of my drives (Caviar). I hooked it up into SATA #2 with SSD in #0 (nothing in #1) and my DVDROM in SATA #3. The drive LISTS itself during post, but when I actually double click "My Computer", my drive is not there. It's not even in Disk Management, either.

Right click My Computer, click on Manage. From there go down to Disk Management (should be toward the bottom under the Storage section) and see if you can find your drive there and assign it a letter, etc. This is under XP, I have fuckall experience using Vista so I have no clue if this is any help.

I tried doing that and it's not listed there as well. It's a drive that already has applications on it from earlier today. It's just weird that it's not showing up in "My Computer", but it shows up on post.

Fixed it. I switched my Caviar SATA from #2 to #7. It brings up another screen during post, but at least it shows up. lol.

edit: Fixed everything. Decided to put my Caviar in SATA 5, DVD in SATA 6, and my SSD in SATA 0. Now, everything works all spiffily.

One last question though...my download speed seems to be extraordinarily slow on my desktop. I'm on a network and my laptop downloads at 1Mbit whereas my desktop can't even get above 40Kbps.

So, what gives? Should I check to see if there are any NIC updates?

Perhaps spend it on paying off your traffic warrant or buying new stuff! Oh, I know. You can spend it on a new set of balls!!

@Frantic - Get an XFX 5850, double lifetime warranty >> Sapphire.

Hyper 212+ is a good cheap cooler for i5 and I REALLY suggest a HAF 922 case, just awesome all around. Otherwise pretty solid build.

I haven't seen PCIeSSD mentioned before, but apparently it means I need to win the lottery: IT-review.net - OCZ Z-drive review

I first saw these through the reviewer / beta channels a couple years ago, but their biggest limitation of the time was that none of the PCIe SSD could function as a boot drive. Basically they were limited to storage type / server type arrays.

It will be interesting if they have overcome that!

If they can overcome that limitation, sign me the fuck up. 4xSSD Raid 0 without the bandwidth limitation of SATA? Yes please!

They say bootable on their product page

With these, I could live with 64GB or so if they could Get it down to GPU-like pricing.

I think what I'm confused about overclocking is that my memory already has a "profile" set to overclock (not necessarily overclock) to 1600. The Corsair is 1600 and it has the XMP profile on it. Do I have to uncheck that and go back to 1066 and then overclock it from there?

edit: BTW, fuck the power supply cables. I spent like 30-40 minutes on getting everything all nice and neat and then when I was working on my PSU cables, it just makes everything look messy cause of how short they are.={

sigh.

My personal experience is that overclocking ram isn't worth much real world performance other than tightening timings.. even then it's hardly noticeable. But anyway...

Overclocking ram can occur two ways. Increasing the frequency above what is default, or tightening the timings below what is default. Sometimes you can do a combination of the two.

Let's say you have ram that is default of 1600Mhz with 9-9-9-24 timings. You can overclock it to 1800Mhz with the same timings, (if the memory can withstand it) or loosen the timing to something like 10-10-10-28 at that same 1800Mhz. Increasing the frequency probably isn't going to do as much as say dropping the frequency from 1600 to 1400 and tightening the timings to 8-8-8-20, or something along those lines.

I'd say get the ram running at the default 1600mhz/8-8-8-whatever settings and worry about it later. Overclocking the CPU will have a much greater effect than OCing the ram.

Well, I mean, the ram is purchased at 1600MHz, but the motherboard (I guess?) pushes the memory down to 1066 hence the need to use the XMP profile. Can I just use the memory profile and then start working on OCing the CPU?

Btw, Xandax, get on aim. =P

None of the SSDs on the market cap current SATA2 bandwidth, not to mention SATA3 is right around the corner. For example OCZ Vertex read ~230MB/s. SATA2 is 300MB/s. There is common misconception with RAID0 though because 2 of the Vertex would be theoretical 550+MB/s. They key here is that throughput RAID0 is divided on the number of channels (2 in this case). Each of those drives has a 300MB/s SATA channel dedicated to it, and no single drive can reach those speeds. The RAID0 speed is the cumulative effect of all of those drive speeds on each channel added up.

As of now, SATA2 is not capping speed on any SSD.
