New 3G iphone announced, $199

Apple - iPhone

Thoughts?

This is really going to kill the resale on my old iphone heh. Otherwise, besides the 3g there really is nothing big I see here? Still no MMS, i wonder if its intentional at this point.

The APPstore we all already knew was coming.

I'll be buying it just for the GPS. One of the huge things you didn't mention is support for push emai which was a major failing by the original iPhone.

will 3g really make a difference? I'm afraid i don't understand the technology much. I mainly use the phone for web browsing and edge kind of sucks my ass. Anything that makes me wait less is nice.

I'm going to buy it, because it's an upgrade and cheap and because more then likely i can do this upgrade while actually still profitting as people are still paying alot of money on ebay for old gen iphones. I actually just listed mine.

Whats the difference with push button email? I noticed the interface for email was alittle obtuse but i don't really email often regardless.

It's been a long, leak-filled wait, but Apple finally took the wraps off its 3G iPhone. Thinner edges, full plastic back, flush headphone jack, and the iPhone 2.0 firmware -- Apple's taking a lot of the criticisms to heart from the first time around. Obviously 3G is at the forefront, but they're also making sure it's available all over internationally, works with enterprises, runs 3rd party apps... and does it all for cheaper. Apple claims its 3G speeds trounce the competition, with pageloads 36% faster than the N95 and Treo 750 -- and of course it completely trounces the old EDGE data. Battery life isn't getting put out to pasture though, with 300 hours of standby, 8-10 hours of 2G talk, 5 hours of 3G talk, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio. GPS is also a go. Apple is using A-GPS, which supplements regular satellite GPS data with info from cellular towers. WiFi data is also worked into the mix, which should give users a pretty solid lock on where the heck they are on this planet. Unfortunately, there's no front-facing cam, which syncs with what we were hearing, but is still a little disappointing. Apple hopes to launch in 70 countries this year. 8GB is available for $199, 16GB for $299 -- and the 16GB comes in white. Both pricepoints require a contract. Apple will be hitting the 22 biggest markets, including the US, on July 11th. More info after the break.

Update: Just bought an iPhone? Listen up: "Customers who purchased a 2.5G iPhone on or after May 27 and want to swap it out for a new iPhone will be able to do so without incurring an additional handset charge for the new device. They will of course need to turn in their 2.5G iPhone." And for the rest of you, AT&T says there's no way to buy it without agreeing to a contract. So sorry.

3G will make a huge difference if you are in a 3g area. 3G is essentially DSL speeds to your phone. And push email means that instead of having the phone check for email when you hit the email button it'll just be sent to your phone. It'll work like a blackberry.

Will make a huge difference especially for iphones since they have better processing power than most phones. My samsung blackjack has 3g, but the browser is still slow as hell since the phone is a phiece of shit.

Very fucking slow DSL with massive amounts of lag, but yes in that ball park. It feels a bit like satellite; have a 3g card for my work laptop when i'm on the road - takes a second or two to connect to a website then maybe 500K/s download once you're connected. It's definately an upgrade to that modem feel of a 2.5g connection.

You can set the OG iPhone to automatically check for new Emails every 15, 30 or 60 minutes.

The only thing I would like on this phone over my original iPhone is the 16gb flash drive, but even then, I dont really need 16gb on my phone, I havent even filled the 8gb yet.

I wonder what $199 gets you. Maybe like a 2-4gb phone without flash drive? What are the prices for the older phones?

Edit: Just found this out also for current iPhone owners

Apple - iPhone - Software Update

The 2.0 update will do pretty much everything the G3 will do except the network. You will get the Appstore, Push Email, Attachment support, scientific calculator, and some more.

data plans are increasing by $10 a month on new 3g iphones. Current iphone owners will keep their prices the same since they will still be on the Edge network. The only reason I see to upgrade is the GPS, I don't see the need for blazingly fast internet as most of the areas I'm in have wifi already. But, people are still paying top dollar for older gen iphones, so I might sell mine just to make a profit, and buy the 8gb model in july

I dont know if the GPS is a true GPS system. It says that it will use the GPS by triangulation from cell phone towers. I dont think it would do like most GPS units that will give you an exact coordinate or even your speed when your moving by using satellites. Sometimes when I use the "GPS" button on my phone, its off by a 1/4 or sometimes 1/2 mile because of the cell phone towers and signal. Sometimes its spot on.

The new 3G looks as it will follow your phone while your on the maps though. I guess we will have to wait and see.

I wouldnt buy a new 3g though just for the fact that I bought my iPhone in November of 07.

I see now. You're one of those people that looks for reasons to be offended. It must be frustrating to go through life like that.

And a goddamn good option. I still can't make up my mind if I would prefer the 3g iphone or the blackberry coming out. Especially since now the iphone data plan won't be cheaper than the blackberry.
