Male courtship came out of the notion that men at sexual age (16) were already earning and capable of supporting a spouse and family. Same applies today. If you have a problem spending cash on the likelihood of getting laid, then it implies your not in a financial position to court the girl. The lack of a mate may also be making you look bad in front of peers and as such implies very weak selection traits.
It's not a rocket science; spending implies social strata and makes you more viable.
Women, as a strategy don't really need to do shit as their future earnings can be taken care of pending mate selection; which is why for 200 years female's focused on attractive aptitudes over building cash flows. Self sufficiency was a counterproductive strategy for their socially imposed role. The general idea however of self advancement from a female point of view is to move into more selective mating cohorts; hence why female enrollments in the US spiked after WW I-- or so the story goes.

Tl;dr version:
1. Get some cash, the barrier to entry of the hot/not circuit is self success. Dispute it, but mankind doesn't really give a shit.
