Did /b/ do this?

Hackers' posts on epilepsy forum cause migraines, seizures

This sounds like something /b/tards would find fucking hilarious. In some ways I do too, but at the same time it's a pretty terrible thing to do to people.

That's really not funny. But at the same time, it kind of is! But at the same time, it's really not. :\

I'd say it's really funny. But at the same time, it kind of isn't. Glass half full or half empty.

I think we can agree though that this guy:

Quote:
"I count this in the same category of teenagers who think it's funny to put a cat in a bag and throw it over a clothesline — they don't realize how cruel it is," said Paul Ferguson, a security researcher at antivirus software maker Trend Micro Inc.
Isn't funny. People love animals. People hold a deep seated contempt for their fellow man that is mostly supressed but occaisonally rears it's head for the enjoyment of all.

My impression was that flashing lights causing seizures was a myth mostly, so I'd classify this more as poor taste but basically harmless humor. Those .gif's definitely hurt my eyes to look at, but beyond that I have a feeling they didn't do much. If all the media sensationalists can come up with is "it caused a few headaches and near seizure experiences" then nothing bad actually happened.

I'm not a doctor, but I've heard the opposite. Flashing lights and stuff like that really do cause seizures in people prone to seizures. They can't make a normal person seize up, but they can make an epileptic person seize up.

Absolutely certain lights and colors flashing at certain frequencies can fuck epileptics up. Schatze I'm sure can confirm this, but doesn't anyone remember the huge story in Japan a few years back about some anime that had the perfect seizure trigger in it?

If it wasn't a myth you wouldn't have heard about it . Now wikipedia isn't the most reliable source of information, but according to Photosensitive epilepsy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
Of all persons who have been diagnosed as epileptic, between three and five percent are known to be of the photosensitive type (approximately two people per 10,000 of the general population).
That's fairly consistent with my previous statement that it's "mostly" a myth that epilepsy = can get seizures from flashing lights.

I don't want to split semantical hairs with you about the phrase "mostly a myth," but it's not a myth at all. The better way to put it would be "blown out of proportion." If only a small percentage of epileptics are photosensitive, that doesn't make photosensitivity a "myth" in any respect. It just means that the the commonly held belief that all epileptics can be set off by flashing lights is a misconception; in fact, only some of them can. The difference between "misconception" and "myth" in this case being that a "myth" is something with little to no grounding in reality, while a "misconception" might contain some element of truth.

At any rate, I forgot what we were originally talking about.

That's unquestionably funny.

Pretty much everytime someone posts one of those siezure pics in FoHSS I get several PMs asking me to remove it. (Especially when I'm the one that put it there!)
