How great is Philadelphia?

Thanks everyone for the input. Lots of great and varied advice here, and there's plenty to think about. I appreciate it much. My sister has lived in Philly for the past 7 years so I'll talk to her and try to suss out her genuine opinion on the city. It does seem that Philly, taxes aside, is one of the better cities to live in considering how the others get treated on this board. Plus, culture is a pretty big factor. That said, I'll look into the job market in the south and the west coast.

if you want to work in KoP you should try to find a place in conshohocken or norristown. a friend of mine lives in conshy and works in KoP and the commute isn't bad. KoP is a weird fucking place tho, tons of foreigners and tourists and shit get drawn there because of the mall i guess. if you don't want to get "chain shanked" tho i'd recommend you stay the fuck away from KoP, though they do have a Champps bar there like the one at PSU but a lil smaller that is pretty bad ass.

to answer your question plainly though, philadelphia is not really that great. if i didn't have a sense of attachment from growing up here then i would probably hate the place to be quite honest. theres a lot of home town pride here if you you're not from the town you'll probably feel left out. theres also a way of conducting yourself that is kind of unique to the city and if you don't pick up on it quick you'll end up looking like a jackass.

there is a ton of shit to do here, however. old city, manayunk, south street, mainline are the hot spots for younger people. plus we got the tweeter center (now the susquehanna bank center) right across the river in camden which is an amazingly fun venue during the summer, and two brand new sports stadiums that are mad nice to be at.

Delaware isn't a bad place to live though, good proximity to far more interesting places, no sales tax, not completely scummy everywhere.

This. Live in Delaware. It is sooooo much cheaper then Philadelphia and especially cheaper then New Jersey. No sales tax. Very laid back attitude in general.

And easily within driving distance of Philly (northern Delaware, not Slower Delaware).

There's nothing (or barely anything) of value to actually DO in Delaware, though. We generally drive to Philly, New York, Baltimore, or DC if we want anything grand (especially strip club wise).

But, the nice thing is, due to Delaware's location, we can do that.

Northern Delaware is also infected by Philly sports fever just as Philly is, whereas southern is Baltimore and Philly mixed. Kind of weird.

Also, if you have money, Delilahs is the best strip club in Philly. If not, Risque I guess.

Seriously boring place on its own, but there are definitely a lot of good reasons to live in Delaware due to that proximity.
