I have FIOS and I love it so much more than Comcast. The only thing I'd recommend is buying a real modem, as the one they give you is pretty shitty and tends to die every 6 months, and its kind of a pain in the ass to have to get sent a new one/ship the broken one back. Also $70 a month? That seems really high. We get 15mb down (or higher) for I think $49.99 month. I love being in an area rife with competition!

What modem are you talking about for FIOS? I hate the fios modem that they gave me. It's some ActionTec that doesn't have enough onboard ram for heavy net useage. I have total number of connections set REALLY high. Total amount is even higher when combined with all the computers on the network going thru it. That ActionTec really does suck and starts puking when I'm totaling 300-400 active connections at one time.

I followed some guide that showed how to bridge that modem with my custom DD linksys one. Never have dropped connections anymore. I had my ActionTec modem power die about a week ago also, so the quality of that modem is pretty bad (imo) and if I can replace it completely, I would.

I decided to go the route of ordering FIOS today and found a few things strange.

1. They wouldn't honor the deal they showed on the website even though I referenced it. I'm not too picky so I just set the account up online instead.

2. They gave me an install date pretty far in the future. (4/17) Even after trying to change the date on the package site, I decided to just say screw it and move my Comcast cable internet for a week or two and just have two services turned on currently. I found out later that I wanted to see if they had anything earlier next week, and found that on the site where you can request a change in your install time, there were times available even tomorrow!

I'm excited I don't have to keep Comcast any longer, but damn, that site sucks.

I am quite eager to check out what 15mb upload speeds are like. I'm looking forward to setting up an FTP on an extra box that I'll put up as a file server to host photos/videos of my daughter and her growing up for our family instead of having to rely on some site that may lose/corrupt/etc files.

All in all it has been a good morning!

Again, thank everyone for their insight into this, and I will definitely be asking about different modems when they come out. I want nothing to do with any wireless BS that they have and hope that I will be able to use my current router without any issues. My only concerns currently are port forwarding, if this ActionTech modem has a router built into it.

Just be careful when Hose A and Hose B show up to install it. I've read several stories of woe where they set the person's house on fire trying to install FIOS.

Does anyone here have FIOS and *NOT* do any bittorrenting? How's the difference in performance?

I ask because I have Cox for my cable service. The only time I hit my maximum download speed is when I'm downloading from MSDN. In all other cases I'm nowhere near my max download speed. Given that I can reach my max download speed I suspect that the problem is due to the server I'm downloading from, or due to the network.

I had about 10 days of crossover with my old Comcast subscription where both internet signals were coming in on the same coaxial line. I simply used two splitters to go to the different modems + TV and everything still worked.

Installation times are based upon available contractors in the area to do the work, although 2 weeks isn't that long given the wait that some areas have. They'll give you the ActionTech Modem which is a combo modem/wireless router, so it includes port forwarding and everything else. It can be turned into a bridge to work with your existing router if you have the know-how along with a guide
( How-to: make ActionTec MI424-WR a network bridge - dslreports.com )

Thank you for the link there. I'll definitely take that into account when I get everything up and running. It looks like I will have everyone showing up on the same afternoon/evening to take care of everything, and will likely only need to purchase a couple splitters total for getting everything set up. Here's to hoping that everything turns out ok.

What feature of performance are important to you? Ping or bandwidth?

I have 6m/384k Comcast and 20m/5m Verizon connected to the same computer. I just keep one disabled. I can run a tracert or an unofficial speed test download for ya.

More unofficial I guess. What is your feel for performance if you just randomly browse the web, play online games, etc.

Is it noticably faster with Verizon vs Comcast in those situations?

So after a little over a week, here are my impressions so far.

Installation:

The guy was there 15 minutes early, and was waiting when I got home from work. He seemed frustrated from the get-go, but hell, I scheduled the appointment and took a half day off of work to be there before the time.

They have to install a battery backup for the line for some reason, which the tech couldn't realy explain to me aside from "It's what I have to do," and in the process unplugged my garage door opener. He didn't even tell me that he had done this, as only one of the outlets above that particular door was hot. It was frustrating when later that evening I went to close the door and realized that I had to choose one or the other.

I had requested that they install a coax outlet on the front wall of the house, which they said would be no charge, but they did have to drill through the wall. The guy walked in the house in his workboots after being asked to remove them and scratched up my new bamboo floors, as well as not cleaning up any of the garbage from drilling a hole through my wall. I'm incredibly upset about this still as it shows a terrible lack of professionalism. The house was freshly remodeled and we hadn't even moved in yet and had to deal with someone treating this house with such disrespect.

Service since:

The speed is fantastic. I know I'm not utilizing most of it, but I do like the comfort that it's "there if I need it." I've noticed my ping going down in WoW so far, hovering around 80ms in unpopulated areas and in the old world, to 180ms in areas such as Shat or any BG/Raid. Definitely an improvement over the constant 250ms that I was getting through Comcast.

I've witnessed my connection dropping for 10-15 seconds when I run utorrent. I'm not even a heavy user, and only had 5 active torrents and was frequently getting disconnected. I've looked at the dslreports forums and tried setting up the router as a bridge, but it seems that I don't have some of the settings on mine that they show in the screenshots. I need to do some further research and hopefully can get that sorted out.

The customer sites are terrible. I have a Verizon Wireless phone, and they wouldn't allow me to set up the FIOS service under the same account login (which they tout being able to consolidate all of them on their webpage!) and had to create another login, which has since not worked on the website. I'm frustrated by this, as I'd like to get some of my personal webpage stuff up and running and currently can't and I'm not incredibly compelled to sit on the phone after I get off of work trying to get a simple login working.

As much as I hate Comcast's customer support, they sadly have a leg up on Verizon in this department.

When/if FIOS TV becomes available in my area, I might pick it up, but I'm frustrated all to hell with the state of how I was treated and am let down that I'm stuck in this contact for another two years.

Buy an illegal Buffalo router from an ebay person in Hong Kong or Taiwan. Never have router troubles again.
