Parking Lots - The new low income housing?

Recently i've noticed a lot of "van families" are popping up at 24/7 shopping centers' parking lots. It's pretty bad, and gross (poor people, yuck!), and I don't particularly feel safe.

Wal-Mart seems to harbor the worst of them, with their huge parking structures and huge selection of whatever a homeless family would need at all hours. Cars stuffed with people who are just lounging around with their feet out the windows and their trunks open. Why doesn't wal-mart chase them out?

Is anyone else seeing this in their community?

Quote:
In Union City, in August of 2004, there were conflicts between police and homeless individuals who camp in the local Wal-Mart shopping lot. The corporation allows RV campers and others to park in its lots overnight. However, Wal-Mart officials’ said allowing the homeless to camp was not their intention. Police say they have been enforcing a 2002 ordinance prohibiting sleeping in cars and this law applies to Wal-Mart. "Being homeless isn't illegal but apparently sleeping in your car is,'' said a woman who has been homeless and camped at the Wal-Mart for several months. "Now you tell me, how can you be homeless and not sleep in your car?''
edit: interesting..

Obviously the US prohibits being homeless.

Just put them in prison, plenty of room there still and then they wouldn't even be homeless again! Problem solved too!

Hartz IV - unemployment and welfare. (cost: 25 billion Euros)

Or maybe you mean the exercise in cheating statistics, known as the 1-Euro jobs. Some people on unemployment can find work where they get to maintain/improve their skills, (actually a good thing) but are only paid 1 Euro per hour additionally to the Hartz IV money. It's cheating statistics, because those people are not considered unemployed anymore.

This is of course additionally to doing what every other country does: not counting as unemployed the people who have given up on trying to find a job. Those simply disappear from the labor statistics...

it's gone on for years since our local super walmart opened. walmart allows it. around here we get cars and vans, but also a lot of campers too. i talked with several people about it, and the concensus was always that walmart allows it.

after watching clerks 2 i had to look up the video for the talking heads -flowers song and this reminds me of a statistic they threw in. something like "number of times since 1979 that britain refined the way it counted unemployment, 25." and then after a pause, "number of times the 'refinement' resulted in a lower unemployment rate, 24."

seems reasonable to me. these lazy fuckers are clearly not interested in contributing to society, why should they count towards it?

It costs more to keep people in prison than to keep them on welfare. This is the only reason I'm pro-welfare, because it's cheaper than the alternative.

Actually most US prisons are already over populated as it is. Thats why so many criminals get out early.
