Well where do you expect these people to go?

I'm glad they're parking in walmart. No better way to raise awareness than that.

that's what i'm saying. why can't we use the 40 grand per prisoner per year to create opportunities for impoverished and people at high risk to enter a criminal lifestyle. schools targeted to non traditional students and dropouts where someone wont feel embarrassed because everyone in their class in several years to decades younger than them. make going back to school and helping yourself a viable alternative. we have the money, so what the fuck? free/dramatically reduced education with a stipend to cover living expenses or offer housing to eliminate the need for transportation. the system in place makes it almost impossible to get hooked up without some family member willing to support your ass while you go to school. i am also failing to see how doing something like this wouldnt boost the shit out of the economy as well.

What we need to do is open up gladiatorial blood matches between our most violent offenders in the open arena while broadcasting it live on TV. The government would make more money off advertising than endorsements than all majow news networks combined! Would also help weed out the prison system so we dont have to keep spending that 40k a year on prisoners all the time.

There's a good reason for not counting the voluntarily unemployed in national unemployment statistics. It's because unemployment numbers are supposed to reflect involuntary hardships within the economy. In other words, "This is the percentage of the work-capable and work-willing population unable to find work." That's a much more meaningful indicator of national economic health than "This is the total number of people not working for miscellaneous reasons." There is a crucial and important distinction to be drawn between unemployment (involuntary) and nonemployment (voluntary, retirement, etc.).

Unemployment statistics are less about tracking the unemployed and more about tracking employment opportunities per capita.

I'd say that the number of people who have "given up" looking for work due to an inability to find jobs in their area as a vital unemployment statistic, yet they aren't counted.

Thats because the statistic is for those that are actively seeking employment. When you give up you are no longer actively seeking it and thus are not counted as being unemployed.

I'm not defending it, just saying the crazy way it works.

But if you have no job, aren't you "unemployed"?

I don't see how you couldn't integrate the idea and make education mandatory for prisoners. Any prisoner without a HS diploma gets incentives for taking classes in prison. Those with a HS diploma get incentives for vocational or other training.

Stuff like that already exists in various incarnations. Haven't you ever heard "You can lead a horse to water...."?

Having never had sex, I'd say he's probably not a father.
