+69 Internets | Where the hicks and hillbillies at on FoH? There's been a few threads that last few weeks where big city life has come up, and it seems like these forums have a huge population of people from the east coast and midwest large cities. There's been some interesting cultural differences pointed out just between city and rural people. So I was wondering, any other hicks and hillbillies here? I know there are. I grew up on the edge of a desert, my backyard was basically just open scrub for miles. Had dogs, never on leashes. No fences, they just roamed free. Went to the rodeo every year (my dad was the Chairman of the Rodeo and the Horse Races a few year) and also the Demolition Derby. Wasn't a building over 3 stories tall other than the Hospital. The suburb I grew up in just barley had cement sidewalks poured a few years ago, used to be just blacktop and dirt. I still live there, of course it's a lot nicer now. But I've never lived in a big city and probably never will. I'm building a house right now where if you walked out the front door and went straight, you wouldn't hit any signs of civilization until you hit Area 51. Anyways, just curious. To most of the east coast people and such, I'd probably seem like a pretty ridiculous hick. It's just unfathomable to me that a 21 year old kid could be considering a job on Wall Street, while here most 21 year old kids are considering jobs hanging drywall sheets.

+166 Internets | I certianly grew up "rural" but myself or my family could not be classified as "hicks and hillbillies". I also grew up in the desert (high desert to be specific) outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. Parents have a large ranch/farm that I worked on all through High School. Our backyard was National Forest with a good hundred miles or so of 9,000ft+ mountains and forest. I shot my first gun at 8 or 9 and was riding horses around the time I learned to walk and although I'm a vegan now, I could still walk you through the process of skinning rabbits and rattlesnakes for food and how to properly secure just about ANYTHING to your truck/car using baling wire or tube cording. All that being said, I love big cities and the country and am happy I get to spend my time split between the two pretty evenly. It's tough finding work as a Visual Effects Artist or 3d artist out in the boonies. |

+10 Internets | Sorry, city slicker here. Once I drove out west of town looking for a cheap pressure vessel. Crossed the county line and on my left I saw a sign that read "Jim's mud racing". At that point, I knew I had gone too far and that my kind would not be welcome, possibly because of the 2 hispanics I was with.

hispanic? Mexican. I ain't never heard of no hispanico! Also, different tribes of native americans are all over here, and there's plenty of legel and illegal mexicans. It's not like there's a shortage of non-whites in the rural country. Them navajo tacos are some good eating.

| Oh and I guess I should say, I grew up on a cattle ranch in Montana. 50 miles from town. I went to a 1 room school that had 6-10 kids from 1st-8th grade and only one teacher. Still go up there 2 or 3 times a year. I live in the SF bay area now and there's a lot of good stuff and some bad about both places. After 10 years in California, I think CA is great, but I would seriously consider going back to the country if I could get a job there. |
