Yet another article on global warming

Interesting article here from an Australian website dated 22 Mar 2008. I don't know what/if any political orientation the site or the writer has but you can tell at the end he's certainly seems biased against man made gloabl warming.

Last Monday - on ABC Radio National, of all places - there was a tipping point of a different kind in the debate on climate change. It was a remarkable interview involving the co-host of Counterpoint, Michael Duffy and Jennifer Marohasy, a biologist and senior fellow of Melbourne-based think tank the Institute of Public Affairs. Anyone in public life who takes a position on the greenhouse gas hypothesis will ignore it at their peril.
Duffy asked Marohasy: "Is the Earth still warming?"

She replied: "No, actually, there has been cooling, if you take 1998 as your point of reference. If you take 2002 as your point of reference, then temperatures have plateaued. This is certainly not what you'd expect if carbon dioxide is driving temperature because carbon dioxide levels have been increasing but temperatures have actually been coming down over the last 10 years."

Duffy: "Is this a matter of any controversy?"

Marohasy: "Actually, no. The head of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) has actually acknowledged it. He talks about the apparent plateau in temperatures so far this century. So he recognises that in this century, over the past eight years, temperatures have plateaued ... This is not what you'd expect, as I said, because if carbon dioxide is driving temperature then you'd expect that, given carbon dioxide levels have been continuing to increase, temperatures should be going up ... So (it's) very unexpected, not something that's being discussed. It should be being discussed, though, because it's very significant."

A large majority of people who write about global warming are ignorant on both sides. As someone who works with meteorologists I won't claim to understand it but holy crap... Liberal or Conservative all of the ones I work with acknowledge it BUT, they say it's so minor it's almost negligible in the grand scheme of things.

I think the biggest lol I've had at this company was when some Meteorologist was going off about the pile of shit that is Al Gore's book.

Too much biased shit about this to care. Any anti global warming viewpoint is given less time in the media, and the people that support them labeled as crazy.

I've seen reports of ice/glaciers melting, and then other people saying that some glaciers are actually growing.

I've seen history programs talking about evidence of ice in africa in the past, in places which have always been around the equator -leading to the theory that the earth has been almost 100% covered in ice in the past. And other programs talking about the earth being covered in ocean and swamps at different times.

There have been Vineyards in Northern Europe in Roman and Medieval times and a prehistoric land bridge across the English Channel. There where also carnivals taking place on frozen rivers in Victorian London. Truth is there are mini Ice Ages and Warm Periods all over history and we just went from the mini Ice Age 100 years ago, to a Warmer Period.

Everyone goes nuts over "OMG CO2!!!1one" when other gases such as Methane? are much worse at achieving the same effect.

Doing things cleaner is great regardless though, there is undeniable evidence that humans are fucking up the world for wildlife/trees in various ways. However the mass heating up of Earth is just a scare story to control people like Bird Flu was, if it was a few hundred years ago they would be telling us about Hell.

The icebergs in the northern hemisphere did melt radically in 2007, to its thinnest levels ever recorded.

Oddly enough, the southern hemisphere's ice grew to its highest levels ever recorded. Go figure.

The idea that people who can't accurately predict the weather for the weekend know what's going to be happening in 100 years is ludicrous. except C02 isnt really bad at all as far as pollutants go and if global warming is not 'real' then spending tons of money reducing C02 is pretty much a complete waste when we could be using it to clean up real environmental problems... so its not great regardless, that would be like saying spending billions researching bird flu is worth while because medical research is good.

"Cleaner" is not limited to less CO2. I was thinking more of Deforestation and chemicals(or whatever they where) in the air killing frogs - and all the other stuff that's killing off the wildlife.

Anti Global warming people always go about this the wrong way.

Global warming is occurring. It occurs regardless of man intervention. The debate should be about if man is having a considerable effect speeding up or intensifying an otherwise natural occurrence.

Some scientists even agree that the amount of Co2 humans produce is speeding it up but not enough for it to be an issue.

Regardless the whole environmentally friendly fad Gore has started is good for the planet. Al Gore has started something that has had more benefits than drawbacks regardless over whether he is right or not. If you don't want to give him credit for that your position is purely political.
