Strictly speaking, the delegates themselves get to decide how to vote at the convention. They could still cast their votes for Edwards if they so wanted. After the primaries/cacauses are over, each candidate gets to appoint people to serve as the delegates they won in that congressional district. (Usually this is done by the candidate's people on the ground in that state and not the candidate themselves.) These delegates are picked due to their severe loyality to the candidate selecting them to reduce the chance they vote for someone else at the convention. However, these delegates usually follow the endorsement of their candidate when their guy drops out of the race. They don't have to, but it's highly likely.

No, but historically the vast majority of those delegates end up wherever the former candidate asks them to go. Keep in mind though that even pledged delegates (the ones won from the actual primaries) do not have to vote for who won their district so once a candidate drops out, they have no obligation whatsoever.

The real interesting part of the Edwards endorsement is that if his delegates do decide to all follow his lead and vote for Obama at the convention, Edwards just single-handedly wiped away Clinton's entire "landslide victory" in WV. That's just hilarious to me.

This endorsement is like a superbowl event. On every cable news channel...except FOX. No mention of it there. Just their daily Obama bashing. Smart to do it in Michigan. Last edited by I'm Rich Bitch : 05-14-2008 at 03:47 PM.

That's pretty big, Edwards seems like a good guy to me, and this is probably the single biggest endorsement still out there. Outside of Ron Paul, I was pulling for him this year. I sure know how to pick a winner, gd!
