in re: privatization - and? please explain why this is a bad thing. (im curious actually). the taxpayers money hasnt been misspent they got the value of using the airport/the revenue the second airport has brought in, and privatization means someone else pays for it going forward while the taxpayer still gets the fringe benefits.

Oh I'm ALL ABOUT privatization for non-strategic and non-infrastructure assets. The evidence for privatizing schools and social security are clear in places like Belgium and Japan. But privatizing INFRASTRUCTURE presents a net risk to the state and the public because of opportunity costs, quality of service and security. This is precisely the same reason privatizing things like bridges, airports and public transit is never a good idea---it's not because privatization won't yield a revenue benefit for the state, it will, but because those things are central to the instrumentation of the state and the security of the public.

What corners do you think a private firm in Midway will cut first? Advertising? Luxury accomodations? Oh you think they'd do something about the 1,000+ TSA security personel who patrol the facility 24/7? Behavior like that is acceptable in any other space where trimming for competitiveness wouldn't yield a diminished quality of life. But ALREADY we've had problems with the foreign owners of the Chicago Skyway during a recent DHS readiness exercise.

Ultimately the problem isn't with Privatization but with the influences that provoked Daley's decisions---which were, as with the gentrification of the near north and the destruction of low-income housing like Cabrini Green---influences stemming from his ultra-rich multinational development corporation friends. The communities are still reeling from the horrific fallout with the displacement of the poor from Roger's Park and Goose Island, but Daley's buddies haven't lost a beat. No sooner had they bulldozed the last low-income high-rise in Cabrini Green that they managed to convince Daley to sell off the fucking Toll Roads...

meh europes had some success with it - done properly it could be really good for the city. everyone everywhere has influences. the part other people have failed at is having those influences work only for them and not their constituencies for the most part. daley is pretty good about making the right decisions for a lot of people a lot of the time.

The Secretary of States name is everywhere in the Driver's station, Daley has his name everywhere in the airports and at every city function. No moron, I do pretty well under his pro-development regime. I sequed right into it after doing government contracting for a few years and I'm very comfortable with with how the Democratic Machine's (actually it's what John Kass calls the "Illinois Combine" now since it includes both parties) corruption.
