| Well Democrat and Republican in the days of Lincoln had nothing to do with ideology and everything to do with geography. Northerners were Republican and Southerners were Democrats. Both parties had liberal and conservative members. This style of politics dates all the way back to the founding of the country where the Northern States and Southern States were very much against each other on many issues including counting slaves in the census, modes of representation, and general structure of the Federal Government. It wasn't until long after the Civil War and Reconstruction that the geography no longer mattered and ideology is what began separating the two parties. This was around the time of Franklin Roosevelt. Since FDR was a liberal who happened to be a Democrat, the Republicans started trying to court the conservative vote to oppose FDR's big government policies. Thus, the conservative vs. liberal dichotomy was born. |

| I was going to vote dem no matter who the dem nomination was in November even though I do dislike Hilary, but the way the Clintons are running their campaign I will not vote for them no matter what. I hope Americans start feeling the same way but I don't have any faith in that happening. If McCain get the repub nomination I will vote for him if Hillary is the dem nom. I am voting for Obama in the Illinois primary, but will glady vote for Edwards in the General Election if he is the dem nomination. If McCain doesn't get the repub nomination I don't know what the hell I'm going to do.

This is exactly how I felt - cept now I will actually vote for anyone else not Huckabee. Look at this shit: Bill Clinton: Race, gender key in S.C. - Yahoo! News What the hell. Hopefully the rank and file dems will start opening their fucking eyes and realize what theyre doing and realize that people like you and me willing to cross party lines arent going to buy this clinton bullshit anymore and actually see that clinton IS polarizing. hopefully.

| Nothing either party does today will ever top the Sedition Act of 1798. It literally stated you could not criticize the party in power (but the VP was fair game, since he was part of the opposition then).

| I really think the Democrats are killing themselves this election due to this Clinton vs. Obama crap. I think a large number of the supporters of one will simply not vote for the other who wins the nomination. This will almost definatley cost the Democrats the election if McCain is nominated and will give the Republican's a much better chance with anyone else. |

| As a staunch conservative it pains me to say this, but I would settle for anyone but Hillary. Even Obama or Edwards, even though I think Edwards is essentially a communist. Hillary is just so vile and such a political beast that I think I would vomit every time I looked at the evening news if she wins.

If that was the intent of your question, it started when Bush got "elected" the first time (I used quotes for the Democrats), and then just got worse since then. The vitriol and animosity grew at an exponential rate the second time Bush got "elected" and the Dems about lost their collective minds. To this day, some Dems refuse to believe that Bush was ever the actual President. I think at this point, Bush could cure cancer in his spare time and charge $3 per dose, and Democrats would complain that he was gouging the consumer. | |
