+3 Internets | /derail Since we're talking about ineffective terrorism prevention... the alarms in the NYC subway system go off quite often, with people either ignoring them, or tourists standing around waiting for some excitement to take place. Cops/MTA staff/etc are typically MIA -- that frightens me. NYC Mass transit has a neighborhood watch program called "If you see something, say something" wherein you call if you see something suspicious. There's an ad on the subways and trains right now stating that "1944 (?) people saw something, and said something last year." To me, this could mean two things: Only 1944 people bothered to call in during the entire term of 2006, or 1944 threats were legitimized and handled accordingly. 1944 means just over 5 legitimate threats a day. If these are stats above and beyond day to day NYC crime, that's pretty scary to me. Either way, that's disturbing. /derail off |

I dont see any legitimate economists who think we are in danger of a currency collapse. And yes other countrys are doing awesome, the euro is a much stronger currency than all the seperate ones were.

| Econ 101: If you print more currency, the value of currency decreases. Bernanke is printing money like it's going out of style. His strategy is to decrease the value of the dollar in an attempt to lure foreign investment to the US and/or foreign importation of US-produced goods (and also to bail out hedge funds and i-banks who packaged subprime mortgages and are now butt-hurt as a result). It's not working, and while it may not result in a currency collapse (that's still up in the air, but seeming more likely every week), it will almost certainly cause a recession and/or aggravate existing economic problems brought about by the liquidity crisis on Wall Street and the housing crisis nationwide. The Euro is also set to overtake the dollar as the reserve currency of choice worldwide. This will have ENORMOUS consequences (none of them positive) for our economy. |

"Oh, we know inflation is bad and we'll be vewy vewy careful. Trust us!" It's just another step towards a depression and possible anarchy generated by the furious and financially disenfranchised middle and working class. |

| In fairness, Greenspan had his hands in this fuckup as well. Greenspan basically lent his intellectual credibility to Bush's wartime tax cuts on the wealthy, which is basically the dumbest thing you can do as president. You never cut taxes in wartime. Never ever ever. Greenspan should have known better. Edit: Before someone tries debating this point, let me state preemptively that Bush is the first president in US history to cut taxes in wartime. This is a matter of fact and not of opinion. Obligatory supporting link: BW Online | April 7, 2003 | War Is Hell--on Bush's Big Tax Cut |

| Registered User | At least Greenspan can play the senility card. But yes, all these puppeteers are to blame for mismanagement of the country's economic stability. It seems like an incompetence bomb went off as soon as Bush entered office, killing the braincells of leaders all over the country; Bush, Cheney, the Attorney General, Gen. Betrayus, The Fed, both houses of Congress... It's the best-funded ODP program ever. On-topic: Only the dumbest of the dumb (like our afore-mentioned mentally-barren leaders) would think hi-jacking a jetliner could work as a form of terrorism. Passengers on the plane would overrun and likely kill the would-be hi-jacker(s) before they could finish saying "I'm taking over the plane!" Last edited by Cadrid; 09-21-2007 at 10:01 PM.. |

And sorry I believe I was the one who originally derailed this topic because I think this issue is far more serious. I will stop now.

| If its easier to spend in america wont more people abroad want to use the US as a resource for cheap goods like we do in china? Isnt that a plus? I honestly dont see a downside like some of you doom and gloomers do. Does anyone here feel financially repressed by today's economy? |
