+39 Internets | I feel really bad for teachers... having that time off in the summer... oh and that pension really sucks... oh and having the satisfaction of doing something meaningful. You know what I tell teachers that complain about their pay? "Teach at a private school that pays more." They respond with something along the lines of "I am not qualified for that." "Yeah I guess you should stick with being a suck teacher in public schools then." |

+11 Internets | Teachers in private schools actually make less than most public school teachers, as private schools are usually less strict about requirements and there's typically less stress. People saying teachers are terrible and take no talent ... think about it. Most people who would teach are driven away by the money, so of course talented people aren't going to teach, it's a vicious cycle. There's the occasional person with a higher calling or other financial means who do it anyways, but saying teachers don't make much because they're untalented might have confused cause and effect. |

Or how about pension! Yes, we get a pension... like everyone else. What a job defining attribute! And having satisfaction of doing something meaningful? Yeah, until all of your "peers" keep rambling on about how only the lazy, untalented failures become teachers. Or about how 1 in ~150 students you see actually care that they are there, and give YOU the thanks you feel you deserve. Yeah, teachers have it great.

Teachers make decent money, not great, but not terrible, they work in general less hours than most people making similar money with great job security... name another profession where you can expect to work at the same place from college to retirement and barely even worry about losing your job ever unless you are like in your first few years or a total and complete fuckup to the point where even your massive union cant save your ass. And most people are not appreciated for their jobs, its not some exclusive thing, its the service industry, people berate you for your fuckups and dont thank you for you triumphs, thats just life. I mean i respect teachers, the good ones, its an important job and a good teacher can make a real difference... but fuck most of them are average and no different from anyone else... to complain about making a middle class wage with healthcare for your family and a good retirement plan is just silly. +11 Internets | OK, you're right, the benefits of being a teacher are so good that it compels many of our talented people to pursue the profession. I'm one of many people who got 2 years into an education degree and realized that while I would absolutely love to teach, I have no desire to be abused by parents and curriculum 8 hours a day and then come home to grade papers all night. I have three teachers in my close family, and am friends with a few more, they get more stressed out about their jobs than anyone else I know. Two of the younger teachers I know work a part time job on the weekends to make ends meet until they get their 2 year raise or whatever. I make 25% more than them without a degree, and they're required to finish their masters in a few years... But again, I'm obviously wrong as the majority of other people are ok with people playing a game making 100x+ more than people who educate our children. Can I get a link to a comparison of American vs. Other Countries educational ratings that someone can quickly dispel please?! |

I didnt say it was the bestest job in the world and hugs and kisses forever and ever. I said it was a decent job, with decent pay and decent benefits and great job security. And its nice and all that you make more without a degree but on average people without a degree dont make more, and averages are whats important... the financial stability of your friends is pretty irrelevant since most people fresh out of college have similar problems regardless of field. Oh and trying to say payin teachers more would = better ranking for america is a fucking stretch i dont think you could even show a correlation on that one never mind causation.
