| Paintball I have never played paintball. My friends recently went and had a blast, and now I'm looking to give it a shot. Are there any good online communities for paintball resources someone could point me towards? Any beginner tips would be much appreciated, also. I.e., what to look for in choosing a field (there seem to be a few places to play at in Sac), good beginner markers... |

| Fires of Heaven WoW Member | Wooded field > fag speedball(inflatable bunkers) especially if you're new. I would suggest renting a gun for your first few trips or borrowing from a friend if the rentals are shit. When I played I had a Bob Long Millenium and it was a damn fine mid level semi but I'm not sure whats "in" at the moment. Spyder is generally a safe choice from what I recall though. When it comes to tips theres not a whole lot to tell you. It's going to sting. Wear shit you're cool with having trashed. Be prepared to throw your ass to the ground. Don't be that fag that tries to wipe a hit off. Bring water/gatorade if you're going to be at the field for more than an hour or two. You're gonna feel like shit after your first couple of day long seesions but you get used to it. That's about all I can think of right now. Last edited by Taloo : 09-10-2007 at 10:08 PM. |

| -Buy paint before you go to a field if you can. Buying paint where you play is usually a lot more expensive, some places make you use their paint so check that out. Buy a lot, shit runs out very fast. -If you get cheap paint (especially cheap paint, but any paint for that matter), check it out before you leave the parking lot of the store, if you have busted paint the entire bag is worthless. -Rent at first. Get a tippmann or spyder if you plan on playing enough to actually get your moneys worth. Both are good beginner brands and are easily customizable, lots of mods. Most people will tell you they like tippmans better. |

| What both them guys said. You can get paint cheaper in bulk at a retailer than you ever will at the field itself. Also, "speedball", or whatever the metrosexuals these days are calling it, is indeed the absolute height of faggotry. That shit you see on ESPN2? Faggotry. Go to a place that is wooded and has a large playing field with plenty of places to hide....but also plenty of places to flank. Speedball loses because it is too small and you cannot flank. It's just toe-to-toe gayness. Think of two WoW warriors dueling using only auto-attack. Yeah, it's that weak. If you are playing it as a "sport", you suck. If you are playing it as a recreational boyhood-fantasy fulfilling war-sim, you win. IMO.

| I'm with the gerbil on this one. The best time I ever had playing paintball was in a large wooded area with tunnels, barrels and houses. My entire team for whatever reason decided they were going to over run the left flank. I being the asshat that I am didn't listen and went right. Well the other team had the exact same idea as my team. So while everyone was getting choked up to my left I came in behind our opposing team and took out 3/4 of them while the refs were laughing their asses off. You couldn't do that in an arena, and that is why it's gay. |

| Totally. It's the paper/rock/scissors game of flanking and deployment that makes large-area open-woodland paintball the best. There are times when you send your whole team stealthy down the right flank and they will win. Other times, it will work if you just charge running and screaming straight down the middle. Of course, there are times when neither of these will work. That's the beauty and the fun, imo. "Speedball" is just a test of aim and gun quality, easily duplicated at a firing range and wholesomely boring.

+1 Internets | tippman 98 customs are great. I have one and it was my first real paintball gun, besides the crappy walmart one I had before that :P Like the dude said earlier, lots of mods and resources for that gun out there. I suggest getting a new barrel for it, though. |

+1 Internets | I don't know where you live, but wear a scarf if you play in the winter and it's cold. I was in NH years ago and it was cold enough that the paint froze. Not only does it hurt like shit when you get hit at all, but I had a stray shot slide under my mask and over my jacket to hit me in the larynx. No fun. |

| Me and the GF have decided to go play our first paintball game ever this sunday. I mentioned the idea to her and she said she wanted to come. I thought she meant just to watch but then she said "it's going to hurt a lot I bet but I can't wait to shoot someone it will be fun" So we are going to head out to this place this sunday.. DARK ARMIES PRICES Hopefully there are other people there or else we will be spending our time shooting each other and she will probably be pissed at me then ![]() Oh and we are likley to rent all our gear since we have zero knowledge of the game.. We will probably go out the day before and buy some dark colored trash clothes and t shirts and some all terrain shoes and some of those anti fogging goggles but thats about it.. I don't know if theres anything else I need to know.. |

| Being one of those speedball "play as a sport" faggots, here's some tips... 1) Being in Cali gives you options that most people in the country don't have. Pick a field based on being able to bring "walk-on" paint. It will be fresher (yes it matters), better, rounder, etc. if bought from a store than at the field. 2) Rent a gun off field, if at all possible. Regardless if you are playing in the woods or at a speedball place, a Tippman is a good choice. It's about as fragile as a tank, and they shoot reasonably well. About the only way you should rent an electronic gun (for your first time), is if your field fees come with something like an Ion. 3) Look in the phone book for a pro shop. Go there and buy paint on the following formula (more to be safe). 500 paintballs/hour of planned play time. You may end up with paint left over, but better safe than sorry, and field paint can get expensive for really crappy stuff. 4) You should be looking at a mid-grade paint. Don't buy the white box specials. Something like an RPS Premium is a good quality all-around paint. Oh and most paintballs are packed with some mineral oil in the bags, it can sometimes leach the dye from the shells...this is ok. Only bother to exchange the bag if there is very visable goop in it. 5) Depending on what your rental package includes, you may consider going out and buying a cheap(er) pair of anti-fog goggles. You should be able to get some for about $30, and they make the difference between a fun day of play and a complete day of shit. Obligitory faggot image... |

| I love the people bashing speedball because they say you can't flank! Sounds like somebody is slow on the jump is all. I like woodball but speedball I like just as much maybe a little more. Woodball you get people that just like to hide for hours instead of going for the objective. |
