+2 Internets | Laptop problem My sister was telling me today her laptop has been having problems. She says there has been a surge on the hubport which is connected to the motherboard. She took it into bestbuy to get it looked at and they say its going to cost $800. Is there anyway i can fix this? If so, what parts would i need to buy or would she be better off getting a new laptop at this point? |

+49 Internets | You can't fix it yourself if your diagnosis of the problem is correct. $800 may be an accurate figure. If the integrated ethernet adapter is fried it will most likely require replacing the entire motherboard, and on most laptops the motherboard has pretty much the entire laptop minus proc and ram on it and it's a real bitch to replace a laptop's motherboard labor-wise. A new laptop is probably the best course of action, like others have mentioned. You may want to try fiddling with the connector itself in case it's just physically fucked up somehow, but if it really was a power surge, you're talking about a chip sitting on the motherboard somewhere that's toast.

| I'm not sure I'm understanding you correctly. You're saying that there was a surge in the ethernet plug of the laptop? And if so, is just that port fried (i.e. she can't get on the internet) or is there more to the problem (i.e. windows fails to boot)? If she just can't get on the internet and the laptop has a PCMCIA slot, get one of these: Linksys PCM200 Network Card As far as repairs go, Req is correct. Laptop repairs are extremely costly if the component is integrated on the motherboard (gpu, network, etc) since you need to replace the entire thing most of the time. |

| You guys are fools to not get warranties on your laptops. Parts are fucking ridiculous. I work on laptops all the time and I have seen some motherboards cost $600-$700 for a nothing fancy laptop. Usually we just approve it for a junk out and get the customer a new laptop as it is not economical to repair. |
