| More E-lawyering needed My company has contracts with some vendors for certain data services. I imagine they pay somewhere in the range of $500k/year for these services. Now at times my company chooses to steal this data more or less and publish it as their own. Which I am positive they are not allowed to do. So knowing they have been violating these contracts for just about forever if i were to report them would I be able to get a % of the damages, fine, or whatever was levied against them? And yeah I have tons of documentation. I've been using it as a sort of insurance policy against the possibility of me ever getting fired, but i really don't want to work there anymore. The reason I ask is because I know the whistle blower act(?) covers tax fraud, and hoped there might be something similar out there for random ip/copyright theft. Edit: I basically want a reward for being a douchebag =) Last edited by prescient63 : 08-28-2007 at 02:04 AM. |

Im not a lawyer, but from reading all that I would say no chance in hell. The only way for you to get a piece of that pie would be to play the blackmail card, and blackmail either your employer or the companies that have had their data stolen for some cash settlement either to keep quiet or whistle away. Either way, you would be playing with FIRE. Just make sure your company is in no way tied to the goverment at all. If your company somehow recieves funds from the Goverment or provides a service to them, its a whole nother ballgame.

| I don't want to blackmail anyone. Just curious if I could get compensated for my troubles. I'm leaving the company soon at any rate. The government doesn't supply data so no luck there. Who knows maybe I'll just ship the documents over to the legal departments of the other companies while I work here just to watch my boss get axed. I have no love for that man. There should really be some sort of reward system for reporting crimes. Things would be much more on the level. |

| The only thing you could possibly do is sell the information and documentation (and perhaps testimony) to the victim. But that would likely damage your career, at least in that area. If you don't get enough to make it worth moving and getting a new job then it probably isn't worth it. If you wanted to be 'noble', then you could submit anonymously.

| I would say his odds of survival depend on what industry he is in and how frequently they need legal services. Imo the weapons and oil industries run our country here in the U.S. People that make guns and sell them to terrorists or whoever can afford them are more apt to kill to ensure their sales continue. I think that's what Vietnam was about... If he's in the paper industry or some pussy profession... odds are he'll just end up being sued himself. Most large companies should have some sort of policies or legal hold over such documentation being released. Even if they don't he's gonna get fucked somehow when it's all said and done I bet. He's got 1 card to play 1 time... The 2 companies involved are gonna have all the time in the world to figure out how they wanna deal with him once he plays his card because if the law isn't involved there's no rush.

| LoL how come everyone assumes I want to blackmail someone? I specifically said I did not want to blackmail anyone. All I wanted to know is if there were whistle blower laws for civil cases like there are for government ones. BTW Fight Club is probably my second favorite movie, but in no way can I see that scenario working out. It would be a hilarious conversation to have though. |
