I personally find carrying a laptop annoying for regular use - so mines mostly a desktop - occasional traveller. Laptops just 5-6 lb - but once you bulk that up with the other regular junk, ie PSU - a book, some papers, a lunch etc it adds up fast. My bag with the laptop usually ends up at like 5kg / 10lb ish and thats too much. | |

+5 Internets | So, will be heading to the US in July, and been planning on picking up a MSI Wind when I am over there, maybe an Eee aswell. Been wondering though, what stores will I be able to find them in, not really sure how it works over there. ![]() Will I have to find a specific Asus/MSI retail store, or are there actually some "bigger" and easier to find stores that I might be able to buy them from? Heading to San Fransisco, Vegas and New York, would be grateful if anyone had some info on this. |

+2 Internets | Using my mad Google skills, I haven't found anywhere that sells those retail, though I'm sure somebody must. Maybe get a friend to order them from Amazon or Newegg for you, then pay them back with your all-powerful Euro? |

| Hoping to get some advice. Here is some backstory: I purchased an Alienware desktop 3 years ago and I am finally looking to upgrade. Before that, I had Gateways, Dells, HP's, and even built a couple of them on my own. The Alienware is the first computer I ever had that consistently exceeded my expectations. I have always had hardware failures (RAM dieing, power supplies burning out, processor frying itself) in the past with all the other brands I have tried and the only thing I can guess is that Alienware does not skimp on the quality of its components? It never had so much as a hiccup the entire time with the Alienware. Therefore, I am now looking to purchase a new comp and think I will go with a laptop this time. Are Alienware really that over priced? I just do not have the time to really research this stuff anymore. I mean, are we talking 5% or more like +30% for the brand? Here are the tech specs I'm looking at and the price tag:

| That's about what'd you pay for a similarly equipped MacBook Pro 15 inch, aka, you're paying a HUGE markup for the brand, in my opinion. I just bought said $2500 macbook myself, and have enjoyed it so far, but would not say it was worth the cost as of yet. |

| It has a better gfx card and faster HD then a MAC. It also larger and heavier though. If you want to game and don't travel all the time for business, just build a gaming desktop and buy a cheap laptop. You will spend less that way. |

| Oh ya, if this was purely a gaming machine, I would be getting a desktop no doubt... but it is not. I travel quite a bit and need to be mobile. So, with that in mind, I still think the spec's will alow me to play pretty much any game for the next couple years on atleast mid-level settings. Am I wrong? |

| Its fairly future proof with a 8800GTX and a 2600mhz c2d, but like others have said dont expect it to be light. If anything though, you could probably find a better deal at Sager or Powerpc compared to that Alienware.

| Dominatus | I think you should really consider how often you'll actually be gaming well traveling, and in what fashion. If you're in a situation of spending a lot of nights in a hotel often(i.e. you travel cross country/internationally a lot) I'd first consider taking something like a wii, small PS2, etc for gaming to hook up to a hotel TV. If you are not doing a lot of gaming(I'd say 5hrs or less in a week) well you are actually away from home. Get a very good desktop and just get a cheap laptop for traveling(can still play old-school/web games if you find the time). I used to be in a similar situation where I was mobile a lot and went down the same route. Even being away from home 30+ hours a week I regretted buying the big bulky "gaming" laptop. The thing was large, heavy, and the extras(mouse, pad, etc) were just as heavy and bulky. It added a lot of extra baggage I simply couldn't justify in the long-run. If you think you'll be gaming well away from home so often as to justify the purchase go for it(though I'd consider another brand...Alienware has a horrible rep for laptops, regardless of what people think of their desktops, had a horrible experience with mine that was never fixed no matter how many times it got replaced). Otherwise I'd really think and evaluate how you really use your time. I'd strongly consider the highend desktop/lowend notebook route.
