| Working on a Cruise Ship So, one of my friends put it in my head that it might be fun to work on a cruise ship. I don't intend to work any sort of hospitality position, and I was thinking more along the lines of accounting, audit, or finance since that is where my background lies. At any rate have any of you ever worked on a ship in a non hospitality position and how was it? I hear horror stories about the hospitality jobs, but I was wondering if I was still expected to work 70+hrs a week in a finance / accounting / audit position? It isn't that I would mind, because I do that right now. I was just curious as to free time since the reason I would be going after this sort of job is to hop off at the islands if possible. Anyhow, any input is appreciated. |

| It costs around 1 million dollars a day to run a cruise ship. With the casino and restaurants on board there are going to be accountants and auditors. NCL is looking for financial accountants, inventory accountant, payroll accountant (bleh), and revenue specialists. At any rate its not a job that you take for the money but I thought it might be interesting for a year or two. As noted if anyone knows anything about those types of positions on the ship let me know. |

| There are people at the purses desk, but thats hardly accounting. It's more like customer service. And you often have to be around at the desk when people are on the island. Exchange people money. Hound people to pay their bills. Deal with disputes about bills. You probably get to go offshore every now and then though. Cruise Ship Jobs has a list of actual jobs you may find on a cruise boat. It does mention 'Computerized Accounting,' whatever that may entail. You will need to like to live in a closet. Seriously, I bet the employee quarters are crazy tight. Like a bunk bed and room to step down and enter the 3x3 bathroom. Don't plan on having internet access. Only people in the suites get it for free, otherwise its about $10 an hour. Maybe they have something else for employees though. I'm not sure what they feed you. If you get to mooch off some of the passenger food that would be a plus. Maybe you are stuck with something else though. I'm sure you can google a ton of info like Working on Cruise Ships np A plus is there is such a lack of stuff to spend cash on you end up saving a lot I bet heh. It's defiantly a unique lifestyle and not for a lot of people. |

| The major downside I saw was that you get fired for fucking the guests. That sucks soooooo bad. That was a major plus until i read about that. Cramped quarters and all that other stuff i didn't care about so much. |

| Ive heard stories about people who have worked on cruise ships and the main thing that stood out is how much tail you can get while working there. I dont know about as an accountant, but the guys who work the clubs/bars on the ship are probably the best spots for that. |

| After I got done fishing in Alaska, I was in the some little town somewhere between Bristol Bay and Anchorage. It was in an little inlet, and cruise ships were there for some reason or the other. I walked onto 3 different one's and asked for a job, thinking it would be some made for tv adventure movie. I got denied each time, so I took a bus to Anchorage and flew home.

| I have been on many cruise ships for vacations and they are fun but living on them for a long period of time like a whole summer I would have some concerns for you. These are: 1. You get cabin fever. Spending most of the time in small quarters with very little alone time can drive you crazy. You are besically trapped on the ship the whole time and those rooms are pretty damn small. 2. You will be working while others are having fun in the sun. That can drive you crazy. Especially if you can't fool around with the guests and can't play in the casino. Yea cruise ships are fun but you are there to work not play and the temptation to play will be all around you. it sucks to watch others having fun all the time while you have to work. Torture. 3. The food. I have been on some cruise ships with amazing food and others with just okay food, but if I would dread it if I had to eat the same type of cafeteria food all summer. 4. Sickness. Lately sickeness on cruise ships has been a huge issue. If one person gets sick with something it spreads through out the cruise ship like a wildfire. Many times on the news I see how 100's are sick on a cruise ship. 5. And finally, the sea sickness. The boat is big but it does move around a lot and unless you have really good sea legs it starts to annoy you and you really want to get back on flat land. Other than that it seems really cool.

+12 Internets | I had thought of going the cruise ship route but from what the other folks at the employment office told me, you end up sharing a cabin with 3 other people and work ungodly times of the day. I don't know what hours you'd be pulling as a desk jockey but I'm sure it wouldn't warrant your own private cabin. Expect to share it with 3 other dudes, who're most likely Amsterdam in origin. |
