I'm not saying what Scientologists do is ok, far from it. Just saying they are far from the only ones out there that do those things. The history of a lot of the major religions out there have similar stories. Most religions have at least some good in them that attract people though. Also for any religion out there you will find fanatics that do crazy destructive things, and people that just take the good out of the teachings and make themselves and those around them better.

Eh, a handful of people, perhaps. Scientology may be 'evil', but nearly every other major religion has caused much more death and destruction to the world.

And who the fuck is defending Scientology? The point is all religions are equally fucking goofy. Why is god so much more feasible then some fucking aliens? Only because our society has accepted it, overall.

And because of that, giving money to people who exploit Christianity is fine. But Scientology doing the same is EVIL! In the end, it's the same shit, except billions upon billions more have been made exploiting Christianity than Scientology.

Of course Scientology is terrible and evil, but in a way the situation is also extremely funny. They are so obviously a pyramid scheme/evil cult that clearly needs to be shut down, and yet they get away with all of it(well... in this country) because they label themselves a religion. It illustrates perfectly the absurdity of putting so much faith in something which is run by people who are essentially complete strangers.

I can totally understand people who believe in God or even something like the Bible. I know what that's like and I don't automatically think any less of them. What I can't understand is why so many people are so eager to be con'd by the crooks running organized religions. Even if a religion is started 100% sincerely and with the best of intentions, it will be hijacked, and it will be corrupted. Yes, Scientology is a pyramid scheme. However, over the last 10~ years my parents have paid $100k+ in tithing, so what does that make the LDS church?

So yeah, I have no problem hating both Scientology and "real" organized religions. I got enough hate for everyone. But you cannot deny the comedy involved with Scientology. Here's a guy who flat out tells us, openly and plainly, that he's going to create a bogus religion for the sole purpose of making money, and then he does and it works. I can't decide if I'd rather shoot him in the face or shake his hand.

There's nothing wrong with commenting on the hilarity of the whole situation even if I want Scientology erased from the planet.

The church spends its money in many different ways and they keep all of that information private. So, the LDS church is extremely wealthy, but it's hard to pin down exact numbers because they don't release any. An article from Time magazine back in 1997 estimated the church had assets with a total value of at least 30~ billion and an annual gross income of about 5.9 billion. I can't remember the exact numbers but the estimate is that they'd rank somewhere in the middle of the fortune 500. This was 12 years ago and the church claims it has only grown since then.

The LDS church owns a shit ton of land all over the world. Right now they're spending 1 billion~ to build a new shopping mall in downtown Salt Lake City. A shopping mall. Let that sink in. Anyway, it's impossible to say how they spent my parents money. Maybe it went to feed starving children in Africa, maybe it was used to build a temple, or maybe it was used to build a new JC Penny. Who knows. As far as I'm concerned it went to all three.

We need to re-rail this quickly though because I think James might hurt me if I keep this up.
