| Actually heard this on the radio today, 105.7 in the DC area. Current media spin is that "Germany is banning religion again" based on this debacle. Yeah there's such an obvious similarity between rejecting a film request on their military bases and... the Holocaust?

+25 Internets | The "church" is also on trial in France (it started on the 25th). They are being accused of "fraudulent abuse of a state of ignorance or weakness" which is something that appeared in 2001 with an anti-sect legislation. It's important to note that it is not a person that is on trial, but the organization, meaning that if it is found guilty it could be disbanded (only in France obviously). It was a pretty long procedure and most of the original plaintiffs got bought into withdrawing, but a couple people are still here to testify...

| for a start, the catholic church doesn't charge you for their services in the 5 figure range or demand that you cut off all your contacts to the non-catholic world. Their current leader also is Emperor Palpatine, which is just way cooler than Tom Cruise. |

+4 Internets | Catholics may not charge you in the thousands but they are far from new at getting people to give them excess amounts of cash. Throughout time they've gathered massive capital and gold and spent it on many lavish things. Rather the only difference is the amount of money they charge newcomers, Scientology in essence just has a different business model. |

| I grew up a catholic and going to church a bit, and we never got asked for money ever. Donations at the end of church, but that was what a dollar or 2. They never ever said, pay for this punk! Check, they would even give you a bible if you wanted it free of charge.

| Yeah, I've always known Catholics and protestant denominations to happily give out bibles/literature for free. Last time I checked, the majority of priests/pastors/whatever aren't raking in the dough. Generally, these denominations spend a lot of money on funding missionaries as well. You don't hear too much about scientology sending missionaries over to Africa to save the children, unless you're talking about 1 at a time through adoption. |
