| Newb Tax Return So its nearing tax time and I've been getting my W-2s ready for filing. I think I don't really have to file, since I'm a dependent student and didn't earn more than $5000.00 last year, but I thought I should anyway to see if I could get some money back. What should I be looking for to get for a return? Would I just get all of my federal tax back or would soc. sec/medicare taxes also be included. Also, what your opinion of online tax sites, like turbotax.com. Anything I should look out for to not mess up my taxes? Any suggestions of good tax filing sites/places? Also just a silly wage question. Are soc. sec wages/medicare wages the same amount as my regular wages? Last edited by Avellon : 02-26-2007 at 12:49 AM. |

| Your taxes are so simple there isn't going to be anything to mess up. Hopefully you have last year's tax return because you need it to efile, but other than that filing online is very easy. Turbotax or H&R Block are equally as good as far as I can tell (I've used both). |

| Send me your name, address, social security number, and a routing number to your bank with the maiden name of your mother to deposit the money into and I will make sure to maximize my tax return. I mean your tax return. I think? |

+18 Internets | Just pick up a 10-40 EZ. Don't bother with any tax prep software or efile or a tax service. It should take you no more than 3-4 minutes to complete. You'll get back all of your federal taxes but nothing else. |

+31 Internets | And you don't actually 'need' to file, since you can file for up to 3 years prior so long as the IRS owes you money and not the other way around. But hey, why screw yourself out of money now?

| Plugged In Like Neo | I always use H&R Block Taxcut online. TaxCut Online & TaxCut Software - Premium Tax Software | H&R Block | Taxes, Tax Software, File Taxes, Tax Preparation Easy as hell to use if you don't know what you're doing. I don't mind payin $40 bucks to have my taxes done so long as its being done right and its quick. I did them a couple Fridays ago and I had the money deposited in less than a week. |

+5 Internets | H&R block does Federal tax for free if its simple like yours will be. You're better off printing a 1040-EZ form off the IRS website though and doing it yourself. It's insanely easy, the form tells you everything to do. You should get 400+ back from federal and almost 100 back from state, depending on the state. You can efile through the state's website most likely. I did in ohio and it was deposited the next day. You get all federal back if you make $5250 total or less in a year. SS/medicaire/etc is down the toilet though. |

+5 Internets | See I have mixed opinions about it. It's my money in the first place and I'm only getting a portion of it back, but if they hadn't taken it out I would have spent it on cheap hookers anyway. Now it's all saved up and I can buy something nice, like an expensive hooker. |
