| CRT Monitors I've had a NEC FE991 SB 19" for a little over 3 years now, which coincidentally is the same time as their warranty expires. About a month ago (maybe more) the top and bottom of the screen seemed to scrunch together or there would be horizontal lines appearing across the screen. I figured it was either the monitor or the video card was overheating, so I cleaned that my box to make sure the fans weren't getting stopped up by dust or anything. It seemed to help for a little bit, but it's just gotten worse. Degaussing and/or turning the monitor off seems to help, but it doesn't last long enough to be worth it. So I've decided to get a new monitor, preferably a CRT and preferably 19"+ flat screen. The 21"ers seem to be significantly more expensive, although I do get a discount on Viewsonic through work so those might be worth it. I'd like to keep it within $250 but if there's something that fits perfectly with what I want that price can go higher. I looked at newegg and came up with the NEC FE992, but the case being ridiculously flimsy and it being 2" deeper than my current monitor make me hesitate. The second option was the CTX EX951FB-1, but reports of color bleeding puts it out of the running almost immediately. Unless there's a great resource somewhere I missed, it seems hard to find a lot of discussion on CRT monitors. So if anyone here has any suggestions it would be much appreciated. |

| I buy used CRT's, I usually go for ones with the sony trinitron flat screen tube, either 21" or 22" ones. They weigh around 100lbs, but do 2056x1536.. I lovem. Most local comp stores in major cities carry them, they're around 150$ and they're high quality. |

| Why go CRT at all, the problem with ghosting on LCD monitors has nearly all but been eliminated. CRT's just take up too much space on the desk and are too heavy to move easily. Even with just a slight slight ghosting effect once you use the monitor for about a week you dont even notice anymore. I would really recommend an LCD monitor. |

| Desk space isn't a problem at all and it doesn't need to be moved. From what I can tell LCDs cost more for the same size screen and with any ghosting or image degradation at all in comparison to CRTs there's just no advantage for me. |

Personally I prefer the picture on CRT's to this day, but no one makes one with specs that even match my 8 year old CRT anymore. I'd also prefer to buy a CRT if I ever have to replace my 900N, but it's just not an option. | |

| There is no internets | New flat panel technology plus the amount of space and weight you save over a CRT basically means I will never even consider buying a CRT ever again. Any Dell Ultra Sharp flat 17" on up will do what you need. Samsung also makes a damn good flat as well.

| I think I decided on this one: PROVANTAGE: NEC Display Solutions FE992-BK MultiSync FE992-BK 19-in CRT Monitor - Black It's listed in my original post, but provantage has it for about $50 cheaper than newegg. I've never bought anything from provantage so I'm a little bit iffy, but I haven't heard anything terrible. I still haven't gone around and looked at the sony trinitrons though. There wasn't any worthwhile place for them online that I could find. Thanks guys. |
