+2 Internets | Print Server I have three computers and cable internet....one computer is directly connected to a Linksys wireless G router. The other two connect with WiFi G. I have a printer connected to the computer that is directly connected to the router, but I want the other computers to be able to print to that printer. However, I don't want the connected computer to have to be turned on all the time. I know I need a print server (router), but I'm not sure which one will best meet my needs. Do I need a wireless print server, or can I connect a non-wireless print server to my wireless router and have that work? I only have the one printer, but I MIGHT add a second, 5x7 printer. Suggestions, please? Thanks. |

Either will work, assuming your wireless router has regular ethernet ports too. Beyond that, it just comes down to where you want to locate the printer. A print server isn't a router btw. It may have a router or switch built-in, but you can save money and get one that is simply one ethernet/wireless and a single USB port.

I talked to an HP rep a few months ago about wireless print servers and he told me they don't usually work very well if it's more than just a printer (all-in-one type machine) just so you know. Had something to do with bits not getting through.

I have a semi-related question: I just bought this print server to use with a Canon MP830 (multifunction) printer. I had pretty much assumed when I got it that it wouldn't be able to scan via the print server but I just wanted it in order to print from a laptop on my wireless network. So, is it possible to connect the printer up to the print server and my desktop at the same time in order to use the scanning capabilities when needed? I was thinking I might be able to use a USB hub or some type of splitter but I'm not sure if that's possible. If worse comes to worst I could unplug it from the print server and plug it straight into the PC when I need to scan. But I'd like to get around that if possible. TIA

I use Newegg.com - D-Link DP-301P+ Fast Ethernet Print Server - Retail works great.
