HD DVD and BRD completely hacked

Not just the individual media code on a specific disc, but the processing key used in all HD discs. Link to the Gizmodo article, which has a link to the Doom9 forums where the guy explains it and posts it.

You can't blame women for what they do wrong in the same way that you can't blame a dog for what it does wrong.

I think we need to just hire that forum to work for the NSA's cryptography department.

The guy found it by simply watching his computer memory, where the secret code—which we won't publish here for fear of doing jail time—simply appeared.
This sounds unlikely, I'll reserve judgement until I see proof.

edit: Just read the doom9 thread, looks somewhat legit enough.

Fortunately, real cryptography isn't so flawed as what AACS uses. Plus, this situation is like running crypto while someone else has a keylogger installed on your PC. I guess my faith in the movie industry to come up with a way around that problem was a bit misplaced, as I expected AACS to take a bit more effort to trash than it did.

There's plenty of proof on the doom9 forums, which unlike Gizmodo exist far outside the reach of the DMCA. It's more complicated than that, but basically all he did is sniff the USB data stream coming from his xbox360 HD-DVD drive.

The simple fact is, when you have a device that decodes a code, you can reverse engineer it. Thus, with the codes on the machines, and invincible key will never exist.

I wonder if this guy or other people on that forum who contributed to the hacking could be held responsible and face criminal charges, or civil suits.

It seems like the MPAA would get their lawyers all over that forum and server to try and get the guys IP or name or something.

Maybe not. It just seems like that once this makes the mainstream news, someone is going to want this guys head.

I'd post all the juice from the library. That's what uber hackers do.
