Working Quantum Computer?

I'm skeptical at this point, but who knows...

Well, I'm hoping they join my Rosetta@Home team. We'd be on top of the chain pretty fast!

Also, one step closer to the holodeck!

Could be history in the making. Could be a disappointment. I wonder how they're going to unveil their technology.

It'll probably be incredibly simple and basic, capable of only a few very limited operations.

But that doesn't mean it's not extremely significant.

So I haven't seen anything on the unveiling. Was it postponed?

Update. It appears it was demonstrated. The only article I've seen so far is on the D-Wave Systems website.

D-Wave Systems: News

There are no details regarding the demonstration. The article is focused heavily on how much the company and their invention kicks ass, yet provides no details except to say that the computer is not designed to replace existing systems, just augment them.

Looks like the only thing it's really able to do is solve a Sudoku puzzle, match a molecule to a structure, and create a seating plan. The chip is only a 16-bit version that's slower than normal computers out now. It was really only meant as a demonstration and to "stimulate" people into what it could possibly do when they develop a better chip by the end of next year.

a truely useful quantom computer wont be out for 10+ years.

its still so far in its infancy that while steps are milestones, they arent something we should be shitting our pants over.

I'm sure I heard someone say the exact same thing ten years ago, it's like Linux being ready for the desktop. Meanwhile, Water computer

quantum computing is really only great for supercomputing needs at the moment. Being able to compute the sum of all numbers between 1 and 10^100 instantaneously in my mind is great for research but not so practical for my mom =p.
