Matroska Codec Settings

Does anyone have suggestions on how to configurate the Matroska codec? (.mkv)

The default settings are barely audible, but I'm having a hard time to raise the volume output without causing annoying screetches, especially in voices.

I've set the Gain Master to +20dB and the input gains to +5, the audio isn't too bad, but I'd like to get some more out of it.

I run it on a laptop, not even sure what soundcard it has - but since I listen with headphones it should be sufficient.

Matroska isn't a codec, it's a container object for various other codecs... need to know what exactly you're trying to stuff in it to try to answer that. H.264 + AC3 or what?

Oops hehe - yeah, MPEG4 Video (H264) and Dolby AC3 Audio.

Hmm, ok... and I assume you're using BeSweet as part of some encoder package? What about playback, Haali Media Splitter + AC3Filter or VLC?

Actually, just list the whole process you're going through from start to end.

Double click video file, pause, despair

I right click on ffdshow and change the AC3 Filter Properties... in the main tab there I changed PCM to 32bit (didn't notice a change from that) and Gain Master to +20dB.

Other than that it's all at the default settings, just set up the codec today. High Definition TV shows in the format starting to show up as 0-day releases, so I've been waiting for them

Using this codec pack: Free-Codecs.com : Download K-Lite Codec Pack 2.84 FULL, K-Lite Codec Pack 2.84 STANDARD, K-Lite Codec Pack 2.84 BASIC : K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools (full packet)

Ah, I misread and thought you were creating MKVs yourself.

I'd uninstall K-Lite and just try VLC to play it.

If you want to use Media Player Classic, just install ffdshow, ac3filter (use that instead of the internal ffdshow audio decoder unless you're doing a simple SPDIF passthrough), and Haali's Media Splitter separately rather than all the extra junk that K-Lite comes with.

By the way, is this happening with everything you dl or just one file? The reason I don't bother with x.264 for tv shows is because the encodes seem to be screwed up far too often and I end up wasting a GB of usenet quota only to have to go dl the HR HD xvid anyway. I don't know what they're doing wrong, my own MKV dvdrips play fine, but I get a lot of frame dropping and out of sync audio with the scene stuff.

Hmm, I sometimes get out of sync voices too, but setting the seeker bar back a few seconds fixes it - I imagine my laptop isn't keeping up, though it uses <10% processing power, according to the ffdshow codec.

I may just stick with the HR.HDTV releases, the difference between those and x.264 isn't really noticable imo

On another note, what newsgroup are you using that has a quota?

Yea, I think 960x540 xvid is plenty good enough for TV shows. I delete pretty much everything as soon as I watch it anyway. Movies are worth grabbing the mkv though.

I use Easynews, $9.98 a month for 26GB (I've been a subscriber for 4 years and get 4GB bonus each month). Web interface, global search, autopar/unrar, etc. are much more important to me than having unlimited quota. They let you rollover too, so with about 85GB banked it's not like I'm going to run out.

CoreAVC is better than FFDshow.

If you're having problems with decoding fast enough, yea. There's no quality difference, so if your computer can handle x.264 fine with ffdshow or vlc there's no reason to bloat up with another (not free) codec.
